text 'scrolling' horizontally

Hi, I am a newby at VF. I just started working with it this weekend and am rather impressed with the possibilities (also to do things wrong...). I have two questions now:

1. I would like the insert a long text - say twenty words, so bigger than the screen - that scrolls from right tot the left commenting what (not) happens in a scene. I only see templates scrolling text vertically and timed sequences horizontally that stop the text when the screen is full. Can I do horizontal scrolling long texts with VF and if yes, what's the easiest way?

2. Probably stupid but I got confused. I live in Holland and we use Pal. What is the vertical value aspect ratio of DV Pal: 720x480 or 720x576? I think a captured 576 from my digital camcorder (JVC DV2000), but when I print to tape texts that are on the bottom of the screen in preview and rendered to f.e. Mediaplayer allright get cut of at the bottom on the camera...

Thank in advance.

Gert

PAL is 720x576, so you should use PAL DV project template to ensure that the PAL DV output will look like the project. From what you describe, it sounds like you may be using an NTSC DV project and then rendering the output as PAL DV.

Horizontal scrolling can be done with a simple text event and panning.

Create a text event in the overlay track with the text all in one
horizontal line. You can either choose a font small enough for it to fit, or
increase the size of the event to larger than your project size. The first
option is easier, the second option may give you better quality text.

To have this text scroll across the screen, use the pan & crop tools to
crop down to the amount of text you want to have appear on the screen
at one time, then move the crop box to one end of the text for the
beginning of the pan and to the other end for the end of the pan. You can
stretch the event to control the speed/duration of the scrolling.

I just uploaded an example.

http://www.chienworks.com/media/horizontal_scroll_text.vf
right-mouse-button click on this and choose to save it to disk.

It's a VF 2.0 file, so i don't know if it will open in 1.0 or not.

Chienworks,

Thanks for your clear answer to my question and especially the sample file. It made it al clear. You can do amazing things with these functions.

Sorry for the slow reaction: my first experiences gave me a headache for a few days...
