Text tool and subtitling

Is there a way to get the text tool to sync up with the timeline cursor? I have tried everything that I could, but have not been able to get the curson in the text tool to follow the video timeline, which, if it worked, would save about 50% of the headache in subtitling a 30 minute Spanish show into English.

Any ideas?

I think it's the same for all Generated Media.
I wanted to create clouds that "passed by" (from a plane's POV) a while ago and I did the same observation.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by synching to the timeline - I just subtitled a half hour prog and it was a breeze, even with my two finger typing.

I use the visual waveforms to decide where each caption begins and ends, restrict each caption to two lines, use Ctrl drag to make a new copy of each text event then paste or type the new text, and the whole process is very fluent.

If you're adding a language you could copy the entire track with the original, mute it, and then write the translated bits into the events on the new track.

Couldn't you simply drop in Markers for in/out points and then add the subtitle text between the Markers?

Or have I totally misunderstood your question?

Am I missing an upgrade?

Subtitles aren't supported in Vegas 4 and DVD A.

You simply add them manually as any other text might be.

Yes, we're talking Open Captioning here - but, if the video takes up less than half a DVD, you can have two versions on disc and users can click Captioned or Uncaptioned.
