That darn "Frame Recompressed" problem again

scissorfighter wrote on 1/22/2004, 10:39 AM
Hey gang,
Yes, I've read all the archived posts on this issue, but still haven't found an answer to my question! I finally broke down and bought an external monitor, connected via an ADVC-100 w/firewire to the PC. When trying to preview native DV avi on the external monitor, I often get the Frame Recompressed message in the preview window and the corresponding frame rate drop.

The problem seems to be related to the video scopes. Anytime you have the Video Scopes window open, the frame recompression takes place. Is there any way to use the scopes in real time without running into this problem?

Thanks,
Ryan

The frame recompression issue isn't just because you 'altered' something by using a plug-in, it can be caused by other simple reasons.

Some examples of things that might cause it -

PROJECT setting is at default NTSC DV, upper frame.
Your MEDIA is NTSC DV Progressive
Your MEDIA is PAL DV
Your MEDIA is 24p DV
Your MEDIA is another format than DV
Your MEDIA is anamorpic and flagged as 16:9

PROJECT setting is at default 24p (using 2-3 plulldown)
Your MEDIA is NTSC 30i DV
Your MEDIA is NTSC 30i DV
Your MEDIA is PAL DV
Your MEDIA is another format than DV
Your MEDIA is anamorpic and flagged as 16:9

Also it sounds like there may also be the issue of not having the Vegas preview set at "Best - Full", as opposed to "Best - Auto".

filmy,

I was with you until you got to the part about the preview setting. I was under the possibly mistaken impression that preview quality settings onaly affected the on-screen preview window, not the DV stream sent to the external device. Could you tell me a bit more about this, please?

Thanks,
-Don

The FIRST place I would look is the "Levels" slider on the track header. Is it at 100%? If not, bump it back to 100% and see if the problem goes away.

Go to the scopes window and disable the "update scopes while playing" button. This is off by default.

Scopes updating in realtime will always create recompressed frames, probably because the frames have to go through something to be analysed for the scopes.

If your media (input) matches the project settings (final output) output i.e. DV/DV Widescreen in NTSC or PAL no frames will be recompressed.

If the input is chaged in any way it has to be recompressed to match the output format.

Anything you do which needs to modify a frame (video fx/velocity envelopes etc) will mean the frames have to be recompressed, it has to be done, depending on what modifications are made will depend how many frames need to be dropped if any at all.

If it is just the scopes a reasonably powered system will still maintain full frame rate as well as using the scopes in realtime

Hope that helps
