The BEST system

Edward wrote on 6/10/2004, 7:04 PM
I bought a system that was optimized for Premier and Matrox. (I know I know... I had the cash and I just wanted to buy the top of the line, and that's what they had to offer). Can anyone give suggestions on what's the best system setup (processor - dual or not to dual...), ram, vid card... mouse pad..., that would bring out the best in Vegas 5?

The best would be the absolute latest thing out there, being PC compatible (eigther an Intel P4/Xeon or AMD 64/Opteron). Loading up on the max RAM you can hold, fastest HD's available, etc.

That's about it. :)

Ideally an 8" by 10" mousepad would be the minimum. Price is anywhere between $1.99 up to $20.99.

Good luck in your search! :-)

If you really want a nice mousepad, check out this one.

It's really nice and comes in a gorgeous package which I currently have by my front door and use it to store my wallet, keys and change.

Are buying a new system? If I wanted to get the baddest system for Vegas I would buy the dual-opteron system from Boxxtech, that Sony uses for Vegas demos. Search for the forums for the NAB demos and you see what I mean.

VERY FAST disk arrays, look into stuff by Medea and the like. Really need a mobo with PCI x or wait for PCI Express. Need fibrechannel connection to SAN.
Should get some change out of $20K

Hey, a mouse pad is REALLY important. A crappy one always stayed bowed & is hard to use. Me, I'm still using my Quake 2 one a friend got me YEARS ago (complete with kiddie chew marks!)

Gig of ram... wow. :) I want a gig, but I want faster ram then what I got, but can't afford it. :)

I was going to go for a gig of ram, but I decided to get one of those coffee mug hot plates instead. Great for long editing sessions. :)

Fast machines...

Boxxtech as mentioned.
Alienware is offering some fast machines also and very customisable. Incredible laptops also.

If you are so inclined, there is nothing better than building your own system. I did and have never been sorry.

You can mix and match the best performing parts from each hardware category and actually use them (the parts) on other machines in the future, if need be; no OEM limitations/restrictions.

If you don't want to build your own machine though, that is another story... :)

Actually, he can do what I'm doing. Selecting quality components, and having a local retailer order the parts and build the PC.
That way, if his PC acts up, he can just take the whole thing to the retailer and have him deal with possible defects.
Also, if the retailer can't get specific parts, he can order them from a reputable website like Newegg.com (like I'm doing). The retailer won't guarranty Newegg parts however.

If you know what you want, you can do it on the internet too. Over a year ago, I found this place Mark One Computers by random searching. I'm not close to their location (which is good tax-wise). The machine I specified turned out fine. I wanted some things, that were not easy to find in the normal packages (Dell, etc.). I went for a better tower case than the cheapo ones and that is terrific. Nice fit and I can slide out sections with levers or tabs rather than unscrewing everything.

They have package machines, but its nice to be able to build custom if you really think you know what you want.
