Using VMS 6.0b (Build 126). The Sony Video Capture function recognizes that my HDR-HC3 is connected...I've gone through all the online setting recommendations, and...I get the alert in the subject box.
Possibly an incompatibility, as the HDV code on Vegas was young back then. I would suggest you download Vegas 8 trial version and retry. If it works wiht the new version, then the problem is with Vegas 6. If not, then the problem is on your side.
I don't believe version 6 captures HDV, version 7 Plat was the first.
Upgrade to VMS 8 Plat or Vegas Pro 8.
In VMS 8 Plat Under Options uncheck "Use External Capture Program"
Then select HDV when you goto capture.
Under the Preferences for capturing you can assign the HC3, capture diretory and other options such as scene detection.
4eyes, are you trying to preach to me what dvgrab does, when its author (and also author of MLT and Kino) was at my house for lunch last week? ;-) ;-)
The patches for HDV capture exist since the summer btw, and an official release was sometime in September. Regardless, capturing HDV is useless if you don't have a Linux video editor that's usable afterwards...
Is your HC3 set to down convert HDV to SD format? If not, SVMS v6 will not recognize the camera as others have pointed out because it did not support HDV capture.
