The Eating Crow thread

Vegas has just moved back into the indie cinema sweet-spot. 24p DV support had put it there briefly. And HDV helped, but nothing like what RED support will do. This is going to be game-changing. Be prepared to help a lot of newcomers.

I said in a recent thread that it seemed as though SCS had no intention of supporting digital cinema formats. This is me, gratefully eating crow, and looking forward to rendering to DPX for film-outs!

I think you may be right. If the new Vegas is stable, meaning the memory handling/large file render problems are gone, then these additions really could bring in a whole new group of Vegas users.

I'm excited to download the demo on May 11th and run some stability tests on it.

I've already seen stuff edited exclusive in Vegas in a theater as an indy movie.

The Red support is certainly interesting and probably game changing but I wonder what the real effect of that feature will be on Vegas?

Judging from the feedback I hear from friends lighting RED One shoots, it seems like the production budgets have been high enough to discourage editing on a new platform. I'd expect those people to be conservative about this and stick with whatever they've been using.

On the other hand, the Scarlet has a lower cost of entry and we might well see that being the first wave of people trying out Vegas.

SCS would do themselves a favor if they found a viable small production that wanted to shoot on a RED One and shepherded it through the process in trade for some PR rights.

Regardless of how many projects shot on a RED One actually get cut in Vegas, this will pique a lot of interest because of Vegas' increased potential. We'll also see a s**t-storm of posts BEGGING for better support of EDL/OMF/AAF. For instance, most of those productions will still want to finish their audio in Protools and for that they'll want OMF.

Our feature, Ready? OK!, was shot on an HVX-200, edited and color-corrected entirely in Vegas, has played over 50 US and international film festivals (still playing more) and therefore was seen theatrically all over the world. It came out on DVD last week and is available on Netflix, Amazon, Hollywood Video, the iTunes store, the Playstation store and more.

And I can say, after a difficult workflow for our audio post in ProTools, that OMF would be greatly appreciated. And don't tell me we should have asked our audio post guy to do his work in Vegas. I know that it is capable of it. But most professional audio guys work in ProTools. That's a fact. And when indie filmmakers on tight budgets are asking these people to give us a break on rates, you can't ask them to learn your tools, to boot.

But I am thrilled at the jump to 4K and support for RED. Nice job, SCS.
