The future of editing

Watching the VMS fiasco causes me considerable concern; just how fragile is the Vegas development group in Madison? My NLE life started with EditDV which was acquired and retired so on to FCP up to v7 when Apple changed everything; at that time I was still working professionally and had both EDLs and HDD back ups of clients projects useable only as long as the OS supported FPC7. I tried Avid MC; a software I had a really hard time with so on to a PC and Vegas Pro. I am now on v18 and make films for fun so no longer have the weight of professional expectations. I had Boxx build a computer specifically for Vegas; yes I have the occasional crash but it does so gracefully with easy recovery. I have a copy of VMS v17 and have used it; an excellent entry level NLE; surprisingly powerful; in fact most of what I do could be done on VMS.

I enjoy using Vegas Pro but am somewhat apprehensive so will have a serious look at Resolve; the Magix handling of the retirement of VMS is so inept it suggests very poor communication between Germany and Madison. Obvious cause for concern.

I don't know if you followed all the messages on this, but it was VEGAS that decided to end VMS, not Magix. Reason? Resources and to better serve Vegas Pro.

What was mishandled is the way the Magix renamed Movie Edit Pro 2021 and it seemed to pass it off as an upgrade to the VMS users. Everyone was surprised.

I have Vegas Pro 18 on my computer. It's great and will continue to work until I decide it's time to upgrade. And then I'll see what's out there. My bet is Vegas will still be out there. VP19 is just about a month away...

Everyone needs to take a deep breath with the speculations, and take a wait and see approach. Last year's Vegas software doesn't stop working.

I don't think Vegas Pro is going anywhere- it added a bunch of users with HumbleBundle this year, and the team seems focused on improving it now that they don't have to also deal with VMS. I'd stick around and see what 19 brings!

I will certainly stay with Vegas Pro but feel the need to have a back up should it no longer be supported. Looking at the NLE scene Resolve looks to be my best bet. I don't wish to have a subscription program. What is left? HitFilm have just been acquired by a company with software entirely based on subscription.

It is up to you what you decide. But the "sky is falling" on VEGAS hasn't happened yet. You have at least another year with VP19 coming out.....
