A reported sug. retail price of 5995.00 USD makes it very affordable.
The lens is a screw in mount.
The three-CCD AG-HVX200 DVCPRO HD P2 camcorder, supporting resolutions up to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Hi Marty. Screw-in mount? Do you mean for filters, or what? The lens is fixed, a Leica 13X, so you can't unscrew it.

There is some more info at

http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/HVX200/

4 channels of uncompressed audio. Now that is a real step forward compared with MPEG1 layer 2.

Well leave it to me not to understand what the guy said. Sorry, I thought he said the lens was interchangable with a "screw in adapter"? I could have misunderstood completely,
best wishes,

I was thinking the same thing earlier but then I saw the prices for the P2 cards. 8GB card $1700.00 get's you about 8 Minutes of video!

This would work for maybe indie film makers who could shoot for a few minutes the copy off the footage but for anything else I can't see how it would be feasible.

Throw in the cost of the card say a 8 GB card $1700.00 plus the $6K and you are looking at nearly 8K for a few minutes of footage arrrgh.

Seems there is always a catch (for now at least)

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/

At Panasonic's press conference today, Panasonic announced a major price drop in P2 cards down to $1,700 for a 8 GB card. Panasonic P2 (professional plug-in) cards are a solid state memory format which Panasonic introduced in 2003 as their next step non tape based format for video, especially for high definition video. Panasonic P2 records a DVCPRO50/DVCPRO/DV signal to a PCMICA sized card. The PCMICA card is actually an array of secure digital cards designed ot work incredibly fast so they can record the large amounts of data. Previously, a 4 GB P2 card, capable of recording 4 minutes of HD video cost about $1,700.

Would it be possible to you think with a camera like this to stream footage to an external hdd?
FrigidNDEditing wrote on 4/18/2005, 9:31 PM
certainly - it records DVCPRO25 and DV
just don't know if it will do DVCPRO 50 and HD over the FW

Just what I'm thinking (being unfaithful to my DVX100 already) -- $35 buys you a box of ten one-hour, pro quality miniDV tapes....

P.S. I believe you can firewire straight to a drive, on set.

OK It's not perfect but the same quality of camera say the pdw530 is 40K. i was thinking of a laptop in conjunction with the camera. Would this work?
Best wishes,Marty

I work most of the time with a laptop firewire recorder since 3 years, and frankly, i try to avoid tapes as much as i can. It is *so much* snappier to work with files instead of tapes... And when you see literally HD and ss drive exploding on the market, I can't see why i could't just buy a cheaper DVX100 with a removable HD instead of an integrated tape drive.

BTW, the DVX100 is nothing less than an extrordinary tool for me, so an afordable HD cam from Panasonic is a big news.

Well, let's hope that Vegas 6 will appropriately support the new Panny HVX200 then, cause I believe Apple's FCP5 does.

Yes, I agree the new HVX200 with its dual P2 card AND miniDV tape drives does look like a great alternative to the Z1. It offers 1080i 60, as well as 1080p 24, 720p 30, 24, 4:2:2, yada, yada, yada...

And, I feel Panasonic takes this "midlevel" area of camcorders more seriously than other manufacturers do, as witnessed by their AVX100a, etc...

So, looks like some form of HD really is here for almost all of us. However, patience is still the key.
