I am having this same problem. A search of the forums finds three instances of this same problem, but no solution. Does anyone have a fix for this? If not, this is a very big issue for SCS.

I would just create a new media library in the Media Manager. This will create a database that is compatible and in a known location. You can have as many Media Manager libraries as you want. There is nothing special about the default one.

Simple fix = disable Media Manager.
Go to Options>Preferences>General, and un-check Enable Media Manager.

Not-as-simple fix = reinstall Media Manager. Or, as JohnnyRoy said, you could try creating a new library.

If you're not sure what Media Manager is or what it does, then you probably don't need it. I would recommend disabling it in that case.

Some background - I am familiar with Media Manager and have found it quite useful for organizing projects that have hundreds or thousands of clips and photos.

The library I am unable to open has been moved from its original location - this is probably why it can't be opened. It was closed properly so the log file was deleted, and then the medialib file moved using XP's File Explorer. I used this approach because I do not find a move library function in MM.

Is there a proper way to move a library that I am not aware of?

This is getting rather bizzare. I just tried to create a new media library in the "My Documents/Sony Media Libraries" folder and I get an error that the library can't be opened. When I look in the folder, the library was never created. Am I misunderstanding the purpose of this folder (which was created by the Sony install) - is it somehow reserved for something other than user-created libraries?

Maybe I have found the culprit...

On my computer I have used the XP function to relocate "My Documents" off of my C: drive. I am able to create media libs anywhere on the computer EXCEPT under "My Documents". MM must be having a problem with the relocated "My Documents". This seems odd since the V8 install created the "Sony Media Libraries" folder under my relocated "My Documents" and copied a default.medialib file there. MM is unable to open that default.medialib.

Are you dual booting?

If you also run MM under Vista, XP will not open a .medialib file created under Vista, and vice-versa.

AMD TR 2990WX CPU | MSI X399 CARBON AC | 64GB RAM@XMP2933  | 2x RTX 2080Ti GPU | 4x 3TB WD Black RAID0 media drive | 3x 1TB NVMe RAID0 cache drive | SSD SATA system drive | AX1600i PSU | Decklink 12G Extreme | Samsung UHD reference monitor (calibrated)

Megabit - no, just XP.

****************

That is a bummer! I just got a dual boot with 4 gigs of RAM and was looking forward to using that on some ongoing projects...but I guess that means I would have to rebuild each MM I wanted to use in vista....any workarounds?

Will Vista be able to see tags that have been saved to media? That would be an easy solution, just inport the media and the tags will show up. Anyone done this?

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to clear up a couple of things.

1. I just experienced the "unable to open media library" error on my new Vista 64. I moved the library from my capture drive to a folder under Documents and I was able to open the media libary without problem.

2. This was a media library that was created under Vegas 8.0 on XP, and I opened it in 8.1 on Vista 64. An earlier post said this wasn't working but it must have been corrected in the latest release.

Another update to this old thread just in case anyone else runs into this. I continue to experience "unable to open media library" errors with MM. I've found that when this happens if I make a copy of the media library file using Windows Explorer I am then able to open the copy. I've reported this to SCS.

I finally figured it out! As usual, Sony support was completely useless. I think they have a bot that replies to all tickets with "Uninstall, reboot, reinstall". And then closes the ticket after 2 days.

The problem is a rights issue to the medialib file. All you have to do is:

1. Locate the file in Windows Explorer
2. Right-Click and choose Properties.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. This step may very by OS. I'm running Windows 7, so I have to click Continue. You will see a list of users and groups.
6. Click the Add button
7. Enter your User name and click Check Names and then OK.
8. You'll be back at the Permissions dialog. Highlight your user name in the list.
9. In the "Permissions for <Your Name Here>" field, click the "Full Control" checkbox in the Allow column.
10. Keep clicking OK until you're back in Windows Explorer.

That's all I had to do. Glad to finally have something useful to contribute to this forum.
