I guess this is another case where i have to wonder if i'm different from everyone else.
To me, the DVD menu facilitates getting to the content. Yeah, it's ok if it looks spiffy. But i see way too many DVDs in which the menu and introductory media impede access to the content way more than they facilitate it. When i see a menu like that, no matter how spiffy it is, it strikes me as very unprofessional and ugly. True, my complaint is probably aimed more at Hollywood releases than home-grown stuff, but the concept still applies.
Give me a menu that may have a nice visual theme, and as soon as the disc loads gives you a list of things to watch and lets you click 'em. Anything beyond that makes me grit my teef and contemplate finding another disc to watch.
i agree that menu's need to be functional vs "cool" in every case, but when you can have a menu that looks awesome AND is easily functional, that's a win-win in my book. :) The ones on the alien series of movies look like a computer screen with information on it but they're simple to use & get you to the movie with the least amount of clicks (my biggest gripe about many BD movies at this point...). Big Idea's always have hidden features & those are fun to watch.
