The name "Vegas"

Just following-up on a discussion about the 'Vegas' name on threads below. Yeah, it's different. When people ask me what I edit on I usually say Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video. Sounds better that way.

Personally, I like the name. People in the know, do know about Vegas. I like it better than it's the previous Video Factory. Too generic, yuck.

Besides, there are alot of dumb names for cool products, that now sound cool. Apple Computer, Palm Pilot, NewTek Toaster. They sound cool now, but maybe not when they were first introduced.

What's in a name? In my gardening catalogue you have high quality shovels and picks(Pro Tools) and lower quality shovels and picks(Quality Tools).
Myself...I like the sound of "I use Sonic Foundry products" better than "I use ProTools". I'de rather hear my contractor say that second one.
Keep in mind I'm discussing names only, not how they are percieved in the marketplace.

There's a star named "Vega". It's claim to fame is that it's the "south star", that is, it's over (or should i say under?) the center of the south pole the way that Polaris is over the north pole.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Any significance there? Is our favorite software the underdog? Or am i stretching it a bit too far this time? Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Actually Vega is in the Northern sky and once was the Northern pole star, about 10,000 years ago. I used to be into astronomy, but that was many years ago.
Sky got too bright for my little telescope, but it was fun. Anyways, Vega is fairly close about 24 light years away, is about 3 times the mass and 3 times the diameter of our sun. But its much brighter about 60 times brigher. Its claim to fame was it was the first star to ever be photographed through a telescope back in 1850. Heck I didn't know they had cameras that far back. No, I didn't remember all that, I looked it up, but I do remember checking out the star in my telescope. <wink>

Imagine a summer day on a planet orbiting Vega. I think you'd get a 3rd degree burn in about 5 seconds, but you probably would go blind just looking at the sky.

Mate, I wouldn't care less if it was called "Chocolate muffin". Damm! it's what the software can do for me that is more important - and if that's the name that made this program so awesome...then this is the name I would be promoting to my mates.
Here we have a program that is in my opinion well above the rest of these NLE's in terms of performance and features but OH NO....the name is all wrong!!, we can't use this program because it sounds like something my grandma baked and tasted horrible.

Please!! where is the respect. SonicFoundry have gone out of their way to make this program for us, and they have listened to our cries and conformed to our every expectations.
So lets not discuss pathetic things like the name of a program. Let us go forth and bring thy people to the fold and boldly go where no man has gone before and teach thy bretheren the ways of Vegas.

And by the way..my grandma's baking wasn't that bad.

For my part, Vegas reminds me of cars made in the 70's I think... kind of sisters of the Pintos ("never hit the back of a Pinto")
And I'm not mentioning these damn cousins: the Gremlins... mou hou ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa...!!!! And, ok, I'll pass on these Pacers... and those K-cars that made so many people cry: some from despair, some out of laughing their guts out watching the despair ones...

When I started at my current job, the studio used Premiere exclusively.
I spoke of my choice in NLE's "Vegas", and the studio manager said "Am I supposed to take a gamble on that?" Ha well he did and saw what VV3 could do to speed up the work flow, and today we have removed Premiere and have V4 installed at work!!!
I dislike that the name made him think he was taking some sort of production risk.
I love everything else about the software!!!

I think Sound Forge is a strong and good name. Vegas is nothing like it, but at least is doesn't sond like something you get thrown in for free when you buy a graphic card or something. And, like so many times before, when a product really establishes itself no one pays any attention to the name any more. The product overshadows the name eventually.
Which means that Vegas has a way to go yet.

Maybe a name like "Washington DC Video" would be better. Strong & uncorruptible are the first things that come to mind for me!
