The plot thickens...

[cross-posted in the audio forum, but I thought you guys might be interested]

It must be the month of corporate take-overs of audio software companies. Syntrillium, who make Cool Edit Pro, has just been bought by Adobe:

My initial thoughts on this are that it could be a case of Adobe's Premiere running scared from Vegas. I'm an audio-only Vegas user, but from what I hear, Vegas really kicks Premiere's ass on the video side, and the audio on Premiere is extremely basic. So my guess would be that Adobe want to bring their audio up to speed with Vegas. Little do they know that the toy that is Cool Edit 'Pro' ain't really the way to go...

Well I have been a SoFo Audio user for YEARS!!! Being turned on to Sound Forge back in '95 (I believe) I haven't really found any other audio product that is as good as SoFo's products.

Other editors (cakewalk, some other one's I've used) are okay - but SoFo kicks butt!! And the transition into VVideo was very smooth. So I think your thought is pretty much on the money - they are running scared with the quality of VV.

I really tried to use Premeire back when it was the "best" NLE. But the "learning curve" was a little bit too steep for me. Not that I couldn't pick it up - but my schedule and all the software packages I have to know didn't allow me the time (kinda like with Flash and Dreamweaver).

But I digress.

If anyone is serious about Computer editing - they should just stick with SoFo. Cause SoFo is one bad MoFo of a line of products!!

Am with you there kameronj - I've also been using Forge since version 3. It's awesome, as is Vegas for audio. Here's to hoping Sony don't mess with the best software in the business.

might well be right, but playing devil's advocate:

Syntrillium is (or was) just a small outfit (Cooledit was I think started by just one guy and stayed that way for quite a while). Might not read a whole lot into it as he could've simply got tired, wanted to retire or whatever, concentrate on other stuff, find a home for his employees...

At the same time, Adobe is hurting, has to be or they wouldn't be advertising and lowering prices more in the last year or so then at any time since the early 90's, so looking at new markets has to be on their agenda.

Nah, I dont think that Adobe is running scared of Vegas---Vegas doesn't have that big of a market share---I think its FCP and Avid that concerns them. I am an old Premiere user but dumped it for Vegas. There is lots of murmuring about version 7.0---maybe CoolEdit will be part of it.
