The "right way" to back up??

So I have been happily making great movies with VF 2, while quickly eating up over 100GB of storage. I have assumed the best way for me to archive my large .avi files is to buy DVD's and store the files there. However, some of my avi's are larger than 4.7GB.
Two questions:
1) What is the best way to back up or archive captured avi's that are either clips from are the rendered completed movies?
2) Is there a way to compress large avi's? I capture in DSV format (large avi's) and usually go back to DV to make a VHS tape from my camcorder.

Help my hard drive is gasping!

Use a backup utility. This will allow you to copy across multiple 4.7GB DVD’s. You can also backup to miniDV tape. There is a utility that will actually allow you to copy files (any file) to a miniDV tape and use it like a mass storage tape device. You could also buy a mass storage tape device. I think using a backup utility with DVD’s is probably the easiest and cheapest solution.

You can also save the completed movies back to DV tape via your camcorder and firewire cable.

The transition back and forth from computer to your DV camcorder is virtually lossless and, any time you need a clip or all the footage again, you can just firewire it right back into the computer.

That's much easier than trying to break it down into 4 gig chunks so you can span it across DVDs.

Thanks for the input JohnnyRoy and Grisetti. Any suggestions on the name of these utilities - what works better?
I appreciate all your work in this forum - you guys make it at great forum.

The miniDV backup utility is talked about on slash dot and the utility (called dvbackup) can be found on sourceforge.net. I’ve never used it (I just print my final projects to miniDV tape and then make a DVD.

BTW, its great to be able to help you the way I was helped when I first came here. It’s always nice to give something back to the community. Happy New Year. ;-)
