The second monitor

My wife has given me a holiday budget (translated: I won't nag you about this) and I'm thinking of getting a second monitor to have more Vegas real estate (I already use a TV for the external preview monitor). With an existing 17" ViewSonic CRT, a GeForce FX 5200 dual head card and Canopus ADVC10 converter, might anyone have a second to comment on whether adding a second 17" versus 19" screen, or second CRT vs. flat-panel, is preferable?

You will never go back to single monitors once you've done duallies. I'd highly rcommend getting a matching monitor for the second unit though.

Many thanks. (And thanks for the note of solidarity in the "conspiracy" post--I'm entering my second youth since the sixties and getting the fire once again to do a little constructive public-interest work.)

I just purchased a second monitor in the form of a Viewsonic 19" and absolutely love it.
Actually, the long of the story is that the Viewsonic 17" was on sale, so I purchased that and placed it next to my Sceptre 19" monitor. Aftwr working on them for a few hours, I decided that my brain would take too long to wrap around the size difference. I returned the 17" in exchange for the 19". Now I'm happy again.
As you will likely be told over and over, one you have a duel setup, you will find using a single monitor quite a bother. -mjr

The only thing I can add here is that if your picture monitor is right next to a data monitor it'll induce some roll and interference. This might be more likely as you crowd more screens into your workspace.

I kind of think an LCD would suffer less from this. Others may know if this is true.

I'm looking forward to a third screen soon.

rmack350, my experience on a different duel monitor system confirms your note above. I had a couple 19" CRTs and when I had my TV monitor next to the left monitor, not only did it induce interference, but after a while the magnet started messing with the nearest CRT. I thought it odd, but hey, I move it farther away.
Plus, I really like my LCD monitors much better than the CRTs. Better on the old eyes. -mjr

I use a Viewsonic LCD 19" for the primary monitor and a Viewsonic LCD 17" for the secondary with the TV output of the Parhelia for preview renders. I 'm just as happy as a pig in mud.

Parhelia is very expensive. Do anyone knows another video card cheaper to have an external monitor??

You can get a multimonitor version of the Matrox g450 for under $100.
