The Three Ripple Modes

What exactly is the difference between the three different ripple modes?

1) Affected tracks.
2) Affected tracks, bus tracks, markers, regions.
3) All tracks, markers, regions.

The Vegas Pro 8 help built-in lists them but doesn't define them.

For instance, what is the definition of an "affected track"?

I can see the functional difference between the first option versus the second and third... But I really don't see what the difference between the second and third is.

Is there any clear definition on what each does?

Thanks.

Choice #1:
Lets say you have 5 video tracks and only want two of them to ripple after an edit, you would highlight/select the two tracks you want to ripple and the remaining tracks would be unaffected. (They would stay stationary while the rippled tracks move on the timeline)

Choice #2:
Other times you may want those affected/chosen tracks to ripple all your markers and regions, envelopes, etc along with your clips moving on the timeline and that would be the difference between the first and second choices.

Choice #3:
I use the third choice the most as I usually only have 3 or 4 video/audio tracks and I usually want everything to move (ripple) after an edit.

Your situations may vary by project.

The affected track is the track you are working on. For example:

Let's say you have two tracks. The top track has a title a few second into the timeline and the track below it has a long video event which extends before and after the title. Let's also say that there is a marker at the beginning of the title. You then split the video event somewhere before the start of the title and delete the beginning of the video event.

Here are the results with each option:

0) No Ripple:

The delete leaves an empty space on the track. Nothing else moves.

1) Affected tracks:

The event to the right moves left to close the gap. Nothing else moves.

2) Affected tracks, bus tracks, markers, regions.

The event to the right moves left to close the gap. The marker moves to maintain the same place on the event. Nothing else moves.

3) All tracks, markers, regions.

The event to the right moves left to close the gap. The marker moves to maintain the same place on the event. The title on the track above moves the same amount as the event and is now flush again with the newly moved marker.

As you can see, 2 and 3 are very different and can really mess up your project if moving everything on every track was not your intent. Use ripple edit sparingly and always select the appropriate mode for the edit you are making.
