"The trimmer still has its annoyances"

dougs wrote on 3/29/2011, 2:52 AM
I lifted the subject from within another thread.

i also have difficulties with the trimmer, unless its just me, each time i load a new clip i have to reset using tab to add only vision, i would like this to stay locked. Or even better the the option to set individual tracks or combinations such as v for vision or v and a1 and a2 etc.. and have the selction stay until i change it even when i add a new clip. Or, an edit system i use to use had a feature where you could hold down the v key while dragging a clip from a bin and only the vision track would go to to the timeline, same with the a key to add audio only. Or is there an easy way that i am missing to select which combination to add to the timeline of vision and audio tracks from an XDCAM EX clip that has 4 audio tracks when moving to the timeline from either the trimmer or project media?

Is there any particular reason why you need to do this?
I understand that you might not want one or all of the audio tracks in the clips. Rather than worry about this in the trimmer you could just add the clips to the T/L from the trimmer and then mute or delete the audio tracks on the T/L that you didn't want.

yep and that's what i do at the moment. But i like to keep an organised timeline and not have not needed tracks taking up screen realestate, it's a pain to have to delete three new audio tracks created when i add a clip to the timeline only wanting vision and one audio track.

The most frustrating thing about the trimmer to me was the "improvement" they made around version 7 or 8. When I started using Vegas 3, you could punch in IN and OUT point on the trimmer and add that portion of the clip to the timeline where the cursor was located...a lot like old analog editing. In the "Improved" version, you type in the "IN" and OUT" points and it adds the segment from the "IN" point to the end of the whole clip, ignoring the "OUT" point as far as can see.

Righclick and drag from the trimmer, when you drop it you have to option to add Video or Audio only.

In the Trimmer there are two dotted lines, one below halfway of the audio, one in the top part of the video.

Clicking between these when dragging to make a selection selects video and audio.
Clicking above the top one selects video only.
Clicking below the bottom one selects audio only.

Well...thanks for the replies, folks. I got it to work but everyone left out the step to right click on the loop region and SELECT the loop region. Then it works if I right click and drag to timeline. Also, Peter, don't see the dotted lines in 10c or 9e but the other way works.

Thanks, all.

Oops,sorry forgot the regions thing.

I and O on Vegas does not work like other NLEs. It only marks points for a region, not really in and out points.

thanks for the input here. The right click feature i wasn't aware of and is good to know, same with selection within dotted lines, (i think need to be in show video frames mode for this to work.)
I am still looking for a convenient method to work with or more often than not ignore tracks 3 and 4 from my XDCAM EX footage from my sony PMW 350. Great to have the 4 tracks as i can havea stereo feed from mixing desks when recording events and still have the camera mike as backup / atmos on tracks 3 and 4. But i rarely use them in the final edit, and would be interested to know if there is a way they can be not included when adding clips to the timeline.

I came across the following in the online help menu and thought it might help you.

If you open a multistream audio file in the Trimmer, you can choose which stream you want to display in the Trimmer window: right-click the waveform display, choose Stream from the shortcut menu, and then choose a stream from the submenu.

I don't have 10c installed, but the lines are there in 10a and 10b.

yes mike thanks for your input the selection of streams in the trimmer window is a great help, thanks for doing what i could have and should have done, look in the help files. It appears though you can select either all audio tracks or individual tracks, would be nice if you could select combinations of tracks ie.. 1 and 2.

I don't have 10c installed, but the lines are there in 10a and 10b.

The dotted line are available in 10c but you need to be in "show video frames mode."

You sorta can.
I loaded a 5.1 AVCHD file into the trimmer.
Right click and select Stream 2 instead of Stream 1.
Right click again, select Channels and you have your choice of Channel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 or Channels 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5 or 5/6.

I guess Vegas doesn't see your extra audio channels the way it does a 5.1 stream :(
I'd submit this to Sony as a product suggestion as there have to be other folks trying to do the same thing as you.
