Thanks to you both for your replies. I'm going to go back to the start and recapture.

To Refresh: VCR via RCA to Sony DV cam (as analogue to Digital converter), via Firewire to Sony Video Capture 5.0, from there the AVI into Vegas:

TheGr8Steve: The SMPTE preferences: Where are they? Vegas or Vid Cap?

John: Everything should stay in Sync if I do the above?

Any other hints before I start the process would be great.

Yes, assuming that the VHS tape is in good shape with no dropouts.

In the window with the preview screen in Vegas, it's one of the icons in upper left of that window (Project video properties) and it's in the ruler tab. 'Ruler time format' drop-down list. I've already been told that shouldn't really matter, but it seemed to work for me. I still have Vegas 4.0 and am assuming that is still the same.
