Things to check out in V4

Ok -
I've been on this a few months so I want to share a few of the multitude of things that are in V4 that you might not immediately be aware of:

Check out the new ripple editing. It's awesome and saves a ton of time now. Much more like the Shuffle Mode in Pro Tools (dare I speak its name...)

Check out the Bypass All FX button which allows you to bypass ALL fx running AND remove them from the CPU cycle... In V3 there was no way to bypass an effect without it still using up resources.

Check out the automation. You can now add an automation point (unlike you can currently in ACID) using the GUI of the plugin itself. Create an automation envelope, drop the edit cursor, open the plugin to be automated and change a parameter. Voila - it changes it for you in the envelope. Very handy.

Check out the Surround Mode. Very Cool.

Bus Tracks...............FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Input Monitoring, ASIO.

And TONS of video stuff too. The DVD authoring software is one of the easiest I've used.

video scopes, color correction, keyboard editing, etc.

This is an awesome upgrade.

One of my favorites is the "auto-hide" feature for the docked windows. I was always readjusting the size of those docked windows to show more tracks, while I was editing. The only thing I expressed that I didn't like about this, is when I'm working on my laptop, I tend to use the transport buttons with my mouse a lot, and I feel like I'm playing a cat and mouse game chasing the transport buttons around, because they'll be at the bottom of the screen during the auto hide, and then when I move my mouse down to hit play, it jumps back up to the top. A undockable transport would be the ticket for this, or to locate it somewhere else.

It's the simple things sometimes that make us happy.

what do you mean by " drop the edit cursor"? I cant find how to do it on the fx itself in the manual

"Drop the Edit cursor" - just means the playback cursor you see on the timeline when playback has stopped.

So say you have enabled automation on EQ1s frequency band, if you open the plugin window and adjust that parameter, the vector envelope on the timeline moves (creating an envelope point where the playback cursor start point is).

It's easier to do than explain!

Other things to check out: right click on and FX envelope:
1st) note the 'flip points' feature. If you create a selection of points you can flip only that section.
2nd) click on 'properties' and the FX window opens up with the relevant plugin already in view - very good indeed.

You can also "morph" between plug-in presets by selecting all parameters in the FX Automation Chooser, dropping the edit cursor, and selecting different presets.

Note that these behaviors are not supported by all plug-ins, but will work with SF plugs, Waves, and any others that support recording automation in Sonar.

super KICKASS!

I have been noticing that the plug in graphical sliders do not always move following the automation, sometimes they do somtimes they dont, seemingly at random, and I have mailed that to the bug report

Loving this upgrade. Very stable for me. I'm using the beta for production work now. Hats off to SF for making a solid useful upgrade.
