i really have a problem , first off my system is a p4 1.8 overclocked to 2.4 no problem with mushkin ram (512) , my video card is a msi t1 4200, asus motherboard, with win xp pro ,heres the problem , when i go into vegas and try to capture video , theres a message that shows up that says ,THE DEVICE NVIDIA WDM VIDEO CAPTURE(UNIVERSAL) COULD NOT BE OPENED. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT IT IS TURNED ON AND IS NOT IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION OR USER.
all the drivers are the latest one in the computer from my motu 2408 sound card to my video card , and yes my capture drivers are enabled as well with the latest drivers? im pretty sure its not the card because be that card i had an ati 7000ve,and installed the winfast tv tuner and that card was conflicting in vegas i didnt have that same error message but it was conflicting, so i reinstalled win xp fresh , and installed my msi video card but i now get that error. is there a conflict , could it be that vegas doesnt support my video card ? is there an update for vegas?
please help me !!!!!! im desperately in need !!!!!!!

Vegas is designed to best capture with a firewire (100% IEEE 1394 compatable) card, not with a video card. If you have a digital camera, this is by far the method of choice. Results with any analog method is at best problematic.

If your video card came with capture software, see if it is running. It might be in an auto start kind of setup.

Have you tried capturing to something else .ie Windows Movie Maker I say that because it is free if you don't have another app that can capture video. That way you can eliminate Vegas as culperate. If it does the same thang I would check the device manager make sure it checks out okay

As BillyBoy stated...buy a PCI firewire card and your problem should be solved. The cost is anywhere from $18 to as much as $45 for the card

This won't help you in your ability to capture, but from experience I can tell you that the Vegas VidCap program can capture from video cards (not all), but it doesn't let you apply any type of compression codec except for ones built into your card. So, if you could capture from VidCap, you'd probley be capturing uncompressed AVI files. Probley to big for you. :) See if you can get your NVida capture software to work. Another capture program to try out is iuVCR (http://www.iulabs.com/iuvcr/). It's not free ($25) but it has some handy features. If you don't buy it, it's a 30 day demo.

can also use AVI_IO - they have a trial that in effect lets you do just about everything (limits the amount you can capture at one time, but then the limits are pretty high)

Lot of folks use V/DUB, might be able to capture direct to real or winmedia, and there's several prog. that let you capture to mpg2. While the last can be a prob., capturing all I frames at a higher bitrate can work well enough.

FWIW, from what I've heard in the past your vid card may not be the best for analog capture, & capture support depends a bit on what the manufacturer decided to implement both in hard and software. Might try another brand of driver set, a stand alone card, or going the DV route. Also might want to see how things work at normal speeds - not sure if you overclocked the agp bus, &/or if you could avoid it, & if so, did you increase the voltage etc.? IF capture works better with everything at normal timing, might need to look into that stuff.

If you have a firewire device: Why are all of you suggesting capturing via video card?? Sensless! Buy the firewire PCI card and be done with it! That is the best way to capture video through Vegas!

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=302062 (to order online)or go to your local Best Buy, Comp USA, Frys Electronics or your usual outlet

For under $50 you are up and running!

d1editor, I don't see where Soundtrip says he has a firewire device. I assumed he was capuring from analog.

Dave...I was not sure either...that's why I sated "If you have a firewire devise"

Your observation to check his software is a good point if all soundtrip has is analog capture....

If you have a budget soundtrip, and all you have is analog capture- look into a Canopus ADVC-100 to enable firewire capture, external monitoring capability and dubbing.... $250 to $300 and the Firewire PCI card...$35

If you have firewire devices- purchase the card....

Good luck, have fun and edit!

I assumed the same thing. I get all my video from my Hi-8 camera, or people give me VHS tapes. I assumed he's doing the same thing.
