This may be a dumb question

but I'm getting ready to pull my hair out. I've looked through the manual, etc, but still don't understand how to do it!

I have some video that I want to remove the comercials from. I used to use the sonic foundry version of Vegas and all I had to do was click at the beginning of the selection, drag the mouse to the end of what i wanted to delete and then delete the selected video.

How do I do this in Vegas.

I'm sorry if this is dumb of me, but for some reason, I can't figure it out.

Thank you!

It's exactly the same in Vegas 4,5, and 6.
Select the area you wish to delete, and hit the Delete key, or the CTRL+X key. If you have rippled enabled, it will close the empty areas.

Another way you can do it, takes a little longer but can be more "precise", is to click on the track near where you want to start the cut, then right or left arrow over to exactly where you want to cut.

Then press "s" to make a splice cut.

Then arrow over to where you want the cut to end and press "s" again to make another splice.

Then delete the spliced selection.

Actually there has been a very slight change to this procedure in the latest versions of Vegas. If you drag the mouse pointer starting on top of the cursor then you won't be selecting an area, you'll be scrubbinging the playhead across the timeline. This has gotten me a few times. I used to drop the cursor where i wanted to start selecting and then drag, but now this doesn't work. You have to start with the cursor somewhere else, or hold the shift key down while dragging.

The area within the current time selection will not be deleted if something else on the timeline is selected. My guess is that it will work if first you hit either Ctrl/A to select everything, or Ctrl/Shift/A to deselect everything.
