Thoughts on a suggestion for Vegas Pro....

FrigidNDEditing wrote on 7/19/2010, 7:56 PM
Was just thinking that I'd like it if I could just check a box, when I use the 'import media' dialogue, or use the 'open' dialogue, that would say match project properties to selected media. Rather than having to open project properties and then browse to the media.

Just thought I'd put the suggestion out there for other folks that might have a better idea, before I submit it to the product suggestion 'box'.

What if you have multiple types of media selected? What if your project is all set and then you import one more oddball clip, forgetting to uncheck the box?

one of a couple of possible options I suppose:

It just grays out with more than one type of media (eg resolution, PAR, and Fielding, and whatever else they use as criteria)

A slightly more complex option, it pops up a list of all selected media and says please select which media you want to match project to.

Along the same lines, I would like to see an option to right click and say, match project to selected media from the project media tab (unless I've missed that somewhere).

I welcome potential issues with the suggestion, but wouldn't mind seeing suggestions as well, as that's why I put it out here. To get input from people before I click on that submit button.

I've often been annoyed at how hard it is to match a project to a media file and would love to see an improvement.

One thing that always seemed obvious to me was to be able to match a project to a clip that's already imported since that's always the point where I decide I need to do it.

There's nothing that says this has to work just one way, so in addition to picking from clips that are already in the project, what if the project properties button accepted drag-and-dropped clips? Drag a media clip from somewhere (anywhere, inside or outside of vegas) and drop it on the button. Let go and a modal dialog pops up asking if you want to match the project's properties to this clip (yes/No)?

This last wouldn't be obvious, unfortunately, but there are a lot of non-obvious buttons in Vegas.

That's actually very easy to do right now. Just go to File - Properties, click on the "folder" icon to the right of the presets list which opens an open dialog, select that clip on the hard drive, and now the project properties will match that clip.

"select that clip on the hard drive,"

I'd rather select that clip on the timeline. But, I realize that the Open dialog box is probably modal and you can't get back to the timeline until it closes.

We often forget that these things don't have to work just one way. Vegas could give you three or four ways to do it.

The problem with the current way (from my point of view) is that the dialog box rarely starts out pointing at a file I can use to set project properties, so I've got a lot of clicks to make to get to that file. The click count is too high.

I hate high click counts.

This isn't a problem that everyone will have. If you're shooting with one camera and editing what you shoot you might pick a template and never have to change it in years. In my own particular case I'm often looking at things rendered for the web and the sizes can vary, as can the locations of files to point to if I want to set the project properties. In my case the most obvious place to find a file is inside the current project, not out in a folder that exists somewhere on our network.

What I would like to see in Sony Vegas Pro X is:
Some indication like a red dot or a tick mark on the thumbnail of media that have already been added to the project. I know that on "Project Media" window you can click on the "Detailed" view and see the usage count. But most of the time the media is just a numbered file which means nothing to me. On the"Thumbnail" view I can't see if it's used or not.

Pinnacle Studio has this feature on it's used media thumbnails. C'mon SCS I know you can do it.

LightAds,

That's a good one, I'd suggest you submit it.

If you capture an hour of footage in Pinnacle, it can break the scenes into thumbnails based on content, so when you use that section of the video, it flags it. Vegas does not do that, so if you have an hour capture and you use any part of the video, then the thumbnail would be flagged.

And also a mark on the thumbnail in the project media window if that item has "media fx" applied to it.

Currently, you have to click on the media thumbnail then look at the fx icon above the window to see if it turns green or not.
