VV3 is *supposed* to be SMP aware. But my own experience has shown otherwise.

While Premiere6 would render using ~85% of dual cpus, VV3 would rarely top ~55%.

search this forum on 'dual'. you'll get a lot of hits and explanations of how Vegas uses dual processors. it's easy to test and the benefits are clear while editing in Vegas.

the problem is, most people are looking for faster render times, and Vegas doesn't usually utilize both processors during rendering. most of the codecs that Vegas uses do not take advantage of dual processors to a great extent, with the exception of Windows Media (which gets 100% while rendering) and maybe a few others. the new DV codec for VV3 can benefit somewhat from dual processors.

check out past threads for a lot more info.

From the advice of others on this forum, I segmented my project into two parts, loaded each part into a separate instance of VV3, and started rendering. Instead of my previous 8+hours, I was pleasantly surprised with completion in half the time. My task manager readings were between 95-100% of CPU utilization with both instances running.

My setup is a Dell Precision 420:
- DUAL P3-933MHz
- 768MB RAMBUS 800MHz RDRAM
- ATLAS 10K U160 SCSI Drives
- Windows 2000 SP2

Hope this helps,
Glen
