Thumbnail confusion

I find it a little confusing sometimes when I split an event then delete the right hand side of the event only to find that the I have a new thumbnail for left hand portion that is still on the timeline. I would expect that this new thumbnail would be taken from the new ending of the event. This isn't always the case sometimes the new thumbnail is from the portion of the video that had just been deleted. The first time this happened I thought that I must have split the event in the wrong place & that I hadn't trimmed off enough but this wasn't the case as frame my frame playback confirmed. Can someone explain this to me?

Only two things I can think of:
Do you have Quantize to Frames enabled, so that splits occur always only at the start of the video frames?
Maybe you have the Timeline zoom to a rate where the left right arrows don't move by single frames and in this case if you don't use the Alt + Arrow to move frame by frame to the exact frame position to perform the split, its easy to get mislead and split one or few frames ahead in time.
I don't know if any of the above can be of any help, but I can't think of anything else.
