Tif Images can cause fatal error

I noticed that when I opened a project from last month that included a Tagged Image File it caused a fatal error in Vegas 4. The solution for me was to convert that image to a jpeg and then re-navigate to it when the project opened. Were TIFF images deliberately eliminated from the version 4 release or is it an oversight?

I just dropped a TIFF on the timeline in version four and it takes it without problem. You first need to show all files in exploer view. Maybe something in the particular file?

If I remember correctly, TIF requires Quicktime. Do you have the authoring components of Quicktime installed? If not, that could be causing your error.

I don't think it's Quicktime components. It was working fine in VV3 all the way through to render. However, when I tried opening the same project in VV4 it bombed. It must be something about the specific type of tif image because I just tried dropping the original image onto a new, blank project and I got a fatal error.

That's correct, TIF requires QuickTime. The new QuickTime 5 plugin that shipped with Vegas 4 requires QuickTime 5.0.2 or greater, perhaps an older version is installed? That would explain why you can read it just fine in Vegas Video 3, which uses the QuickTime 4 plugin.

If you update to a newer QuickTime version, you'll need to do a custom install. There seems to be more interdependence between the components in the newer versions, so it's best to just install everything.

However, Vegas 4 shouldn't be crashing when you load a TIF image. We will look into that. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks. The Quicktime fix did the trick. Incidentally, the executable only died when I tried to open a VV3 project with the tiff image in the veg file before I updated Quicktime. When I began a new, blank project, and tried to drop a tiff image onto the video line I received an error message about it being an unrecognized format, but the progam didn't die.

Thanks for the update. I'm happy to hear you are all fixed up now (sorry, I misunderstood "fatal error" as a crash).

When you dropped the TIF image into the timeline, you should have gotten an error dialog informing you that QuickTime 5.0.2 or later was required. We will look into that.

Do you have to re-install Vegas for this to work? I downloaded QuickTime 6, but I still Vegas doesn't even see my TIF files.

Change the explorer window display mode to "Show All Files"

Thanks - that did it!

Does this mean I have to buy Quicktime from Apple?

If you want to use .tif source files, you need to install Quicktime- make sure you install the QT authoring components. You don't need Quicktime Pro.

Note: .Tifs will work ok, but if you are creating the stills in the first place, .png is the best still format for Vegas.
