Time Coding?

Xcelerate wrote on 10/15/2005, 2:18 PM
I make cross-country videos, and I am trying to figure out how to put a time code onto the video footage. Because the footage jumps throughout the race, the 5K times change continuously. This means I can't use the typical Media Generator time code, because it counts from the beginning of the project. I'd rather not render each clip separately and compile them, is there any other way to do this?

The Sony Timecode FX will display as follows, depending on where it's applied:

To the clip in Project Media - original media timecode
To the trimeline Event - starts counting from the beginning of the event
To the Track or whole project (on preview window) - counts in sync with the timleine

I'm not clear on what you are trying to show on your footage. The race time?

Drop the T/C filter on the preview window, and the T/C will be continuous, as it's related to the project, not the media.

Thanks, that solved the problem of it starting from the beginning, but now I have another question. When I right-click the media and click "Use custom timecode", I set the time for whatever time had elapsed in the race so far (E.g. 19:00.000), but the timecode effect still counts from 0. Thanks for your help.

No, if you are tryinng to show the race time , and you have made a jump cut forward in time, as far as i know you will have to do each clip seperate putting junk in front to get the time needed,
then splice together

time code is Vegas is somewhat tricky. The custom timecode will only apply to the piece of media and will only show up if you apply the filter to the piece of media. This customs time code will not be output in any way, shape or form other than as a window burn.

As Spot and others have said you can put the filter onto the output and it will display the run time, more or less, based on what setting you have - it is best to make sure your project settings also match the filter settings.

You can also enter an offset on the timeline that would affect a time display - i mean this on a tract to track level.

But I am not sure you, or anyone, would want 3 or more TC Windows burned onto their tape. You could build a multi layers project and just assign different TC windows to different layers - but you did point out that you would rather not have to pre-render the material. But you probably do not have much of a choice here if you want various times displayed at various points in the edit.

If you have subscribed to VASST, you should be able to click on this link and download my "Count Up/Down Sports Clock" veg. I use it for putting race time clocks on the screen for track meets. Since two mile races are boring to watch all the way through, I often cut out large portions. If you do this with the sample VEG file, you will find that the time shown is still the correct race time (i.e., the time will jump at the cut point).

Here's the link:
