Drop the timecode in the preview window instead of on the media. I assume your media isn't starting at the beginning of the timeline?
You can also drop timecode on a blank title on a new track. Just insert a title, have no text in it, and drop the timecode filter on the title. Be sure the title starts at the beginning of your program.

You can also drop timecode onto an Empty Event; an Empty Event can be inserted by right clicking on the track, or by choosing empty event on the insert menu.

By the way, anyone found other uses for the Empty Event?

You can download this VEG file and open it in Vegas. It may give you some ideas:

Empty events are great placeholders. You can't reverse reverse T/C on an empty event though...Which is why I use the empty title.
