Timeline events disappeared

Don't know what I did but all the images of my events on the timeline, both picture and audio, on multiple tracks, have disappeared. The information's there because it appears in "Video Preview." What's happened?

Under the View menu, check on "Waveforms and Frames", or use Ctrl+Shift+W

It's purpose is to do exactly what you've seen. If you have lots of tracks, or a slower computer, redrawing all those thumbnails and waveforms can take a while. Turning them off speeds up scrolling around the timeline.
