Timeline - fastest draw techniques?

We are digitizing large amounts of footage, an hour a time.

We are then creating "Assemblies" of each roll. This will enable an easy "redig" in the event of drive crash (gulp). We keep all digitized media on individual "media drives" (SATA) and all VEG files on a master SATA RAID 0 which is backed up every night.

Lots of times we simply do not need to see the audio Waveforms, so...
Is there a way to totally turn off the Waveform drawing?
Or - what is the fastest waveform draw on the timeline?

and... once drawn, is there a way to save the waveform drawings so that they don't have to re-render everytime we open a file?

The default behavior for Vegas is to retain the .sfk file that contains the waveform image. It's normally stored in the same directory as the media file. Checking through the options i don't see a way to alter that behavior. I know SoundForge has an option to delete the .sfk file when the media file is closed, but i don't see that in Vegas. Even if you move the files to other drives or directories, as long as you copy the .sfk files too Vegas should use them instead of recreating them.

You can turn off the waveform display under View / Waveforms and Frames, but disabling this also turns off the thumbnail display in the video tracks.

According to the help file 8 bit peak files build more quickly than the dafult 16 bit (but appear more blocky)
Options, Preferences, General tab - Build 8 bit peak files.
