Timeline Tools - assistance please!

_Lenny_ wrote on 5/10/2013, 11:10 AM
I've been using Timeline Tools quite happily until recently. After updating to the latest version of Vegas, TLT stopped working, so I checked, and sure enough an update was available. Uninstalled the previous version, installed the new, and now when invoked, Timeline Tools is just one plain, empty window.

I even reinstalled Vegas, but to no avail.

Any ideas?

I've heard of this happening for some users who are running a particular anti-virus program.called Avast. Have you upgraded any other software since upgrading TLT?

Are you starting TLT manually after Vegas is already running? Or are you letting Vegas automatically start the program when Vegas is launched?

Also, what version was working for you, and what version are you running now?

I am not using AVAST antivirus; I use Comodo Internet Security. I'll disable it and try again.

Updates would be confined to MS updates and antivirus updates. The only additional application to have been installed was Atmosphere Lite.

I an runnning the latest version of Timeline Tools as available on the website (1047). I don't know what the previous version was, but I do know that it didn't work with the latest revision of Vegas.

I'll report back with news of how disabling Comodo fares...

Disabling Comodo made no difference. Even reinstalling with Comodo disable didn't help.

"I an running the latest version of Timeline Tools as available on the website (1047). I don't know what the previous version was, but I do know that it didn't work with the latest revision of Vegas."

Now I'm confused. Are you saying that whatever version of TLT you were running, it was working with an earlier version of Vegas. But when you upgraded to Vegas v12 it stopped working; and that's when you upgraded to the latest TLT?

Vegas 12 Build 4xx with previous revision of TLT = Working
Vegas 12 Build 563 with previous revision of TLT = Not Working
Vegas 12 Build 563 with TLT version 1.0.47 = did work, but now not working

So clearly there is something on my system that has changed and is causing the problem. I have disabled the AV, Firewall, and Defense components of Comodo AV and removed Atmosphere Lite, but the problem remains.

I'm guessing that it could be down to an MS update...

Since it appears to be related to the upgrade from Vegas v12 build 4xx to build 563 when the problem first started, let me see if I can isolate the possible reasons that could cause this result in TLT.

My first guess is that Sony changed something that effected the way Vegas communicates with Vegas Extension programs. TLT makes use of most of the communication events that Vegas sends to extensions. If they changed something that caused a change in the way events are fired, this may be the root of the problem.

The odd this is that TLT 1.0.47 DID work with VP12 b563. And that's why I think it's something on my PC.

I'll try a system restore to see if I can isolate the cause.

Lenny, this may sound stupid and I may have misunderstood you but I had the same problem.
For some reason the first column of TT was over the full width of the window so the window looked blank. I just had to drag the other column's in one by one.
Gary James wrote on 5/13/2013, 3:05 PM
Phil, what you describe sounds more like the main display grid appeared blank. As Lenny describes it, the entire main window is blank with no other components visible.

In your case, there's a context menu selection that autosizes all the columns in the grid. From there you can tweak the individual column widths to your preferences.

@Phil - if I have a chance tomorrow, I'll take another look. When I invoke TimeLine Tools, the window that appears is cream-coloured and totally blank except for the title bar.

@Gary - yes, the window is completely blank with no hint of any menus or buttons. Unfortunately I have not been able to perform a system restore as I had switched it off. So it looks like I'll have to uninstall MS updates.

If there is anything else I can do to help figure out what's going on, let me know.

This might be a topic for a new thread, but since you mentioned Windows updates - I think it's time we start talking about which updates we have installed. One recent update completely hosed me, and ever since February, I've been seeing occasional performance changes overnight in Vegas that I can't attribute to anything else. I disabled updates completely a few weeks ago and at least nothing more has changed since then. I'm going to have to start selectively removing them also when I have a break in work.

I've investigated a little more, and TimeLine Tools no longer works in VP10 either. So I think that the issues almost certainly lies with my PC and not with Vegas or TimeLine Tools.

Ah well...

Lenny, contact me at the TLT email address: moasoftware@hotmail.com

Maybe with your help I can isolate what's preventing TLT from starting up, and find a work-around for it.

I have emailed you , Gary. Thank you.

Today I again completely uninstalled all Sony applications and third party tools:
- using iobit Uninstaller to remove the programs and any detected registry entries and files.
- locating other hidden files/folders using Everything, and deleting them.
- Trawling the registry using Registrar Registry Manager for any entries relating to Sony, Vegas, Sony Media, and Sony Creative, and deleting those.

I also uninstalled all windows and updates/patches installed during March, April and May, removed the .Net framework files, a any C++ redistributals.

Then reinstalled.

Still no luck in getting Time Line Tools working as it did before.

Very odd indeed. All other plugins from Vasst, NewBlue, AAV, Red Giant and Sony work as expected, so I am now completely stumped.

Lenny, I sent you a beta copy of TLT v1.0.48 that includes lots of error traps. Install this version, and email me a screen shot of any error messages that you run into.
Gary James wrote on 5/19/2013, 11:15 AM
As an after thought. Also email me a screen shot of what the problem looks like on your PC.

Problem Sorted!

Turned out that Lucida Sans Regular regular was missing from my fonts. I think I must have deleted it after tidying up the fonts left behind by Adobe CS6.

Timeline Tools is now working perfectly.

Thank you Gary for your assistance.

Lenny,

That's not the strangest problem I've ever heard of. But it's right up there. Glad to hear that you're up and running again. I'd suggest re-installing v1.0.47. The beta version of 1.0.48 has tons of overhead debugging code compiled in, and will probably run slower than the released version.

On the side-topic of Windows upgrades, I've been experiencing unusual application behaviors during recent updates of .Net Framework 4.0 (security patches, etc) and the latest update of the entire platform to .Net Framework 4.5. The behavior changes aren't limited to Vegas, but I may have to post another thread specific to what I'm seeing there.

BTW my OS is Windows Home Premium x64, so I don't know if this particular upgrade of .Net Framework 4.5 will affect x32 systems.

Just some thoughts. Hope they help someone,
Ben Nash
