Timing of shot placement is unpredictable

While working on my (first) project with Vegas 5 and DVDA2, I ran into a problem with trying to time certain stills with the music that I was using.

Basically, I lay out the stills and place them exactly where I want them. Perfect. Then I might be playing through it while working further down the timeline and I notice that my hits are no longer in sync with the music. I could then place it behind the segment and it might be right again, then wrong, then right.

I burned my first DVD and the hits were off. Any suggestions?

Do you have ripple edit turned on? If so, turn it off and only use it when you need it. If set to All tracks, markers, and regions you can move a piece of audio (e.g., a music file) over just a bit on a seemingly unrelated track and it will cause all tracks to ripple in that direction. This is definitely not something you want on all the time.

Do you by chance have ripple turned on? What you see in the preview window is essentially what you get, barring a few color space issues. Are you using markers to place the stills? Have you zoomed in on the timeline to be sure you're hitting the exact points, and buffers aren't making it look like you are hitting those points if you have a slower system?

I'll check ripple. My system is a dual 1400 AMD with 1 gig of RAM. To be honest, I'm not familiar with ripple.

I am not using markers - will do that. I'll have to be more precise as mentioned.

It just seemed odd that it would play perfectly, then be so off. It's like I have no idea of what it is going to do the next time I hit play.

Thanks for chiming in.
