Tip - External Monitor Preview Quality

jaegersing wrote on 4/28/2003, 12:45 AM
Sorry if this has been discussed to death already, I just came across it and would like to save someone else the hassle that I had.

The quality of the 1394 output video depends on the size of the preview window inside Vegas (I'm using 4.0, stretched across 2 monitors). If you have a small preview window at the bottom of the PC monitor screen, the external TV picture will be terrible, even if you use Best quality preview. On the other hand, if you detach the preview window and resize it until the video is full size(720 x 576 for PAL, 720 x 480 for NTSC) then the external picture is fine.

Yup - Works very well! PAL here, found this out from the Forums.

BTW - Have you downloaded the FREE PDF V4 manual, 315 pages full colour, very useful too!! Lots of references to downloading and printing this manual here on the Vegas Video site.

Hi Grazie. Yes I printed the manual, it came on the Vegas CD. (I've even read it through a couple of times :) ).

Hiyah Richard! Welllll.... just looked through it myself - couldn't find the BEST tip for external monitor - weird! BUT the manual is a valuable tool none the less.

Hi Grazie. I agree. With my first attempts using Vegas, I thought that the user interface was great, but that there were some features lacking compared to Premiere/Storm or Premiere/RT2000 (which I am very familiar with). However, every time I look at the Vegas manual I find something new, and in fact most of the "missing" features have been there all the time! There are also loads of shortcut keys listed in the manual which can really help to speed up repetitive tasks.

The more I use this program the better I like it. Now, I just need to check how to apply motion blur to events (or even single tracks would be OK).

HIyah! - Unlike Premy, and as V4 can have UNLIMITED tracks, designate a Track to a Clip/Event. Can end up verrrryyyyyy long or deep as a T/L, but the control is amazing!

Don't forget SoFo started with Musos [musicians!] so they have a need for lots and lots of tracks and scores and scores of . . . well . . . scores! - So make use of this feature for your creations.

If I remember correctly, the same manual says that performance on an external monitor is very dependent on your computer configuration.

There's no need to enlarge the preview window to get good quality images on your external monitor. I have mine set as follows:

project: 720x480 preview: 360x240 display: 327x240 Preview Quaility: good

This produces sharp full screen images on my external monitor and at the same time doesn't hog too much of my workspace in the Vegas workspace. Framerate is relative to the power of your CPU and how extensive a project you're trying to view.

BB - I've still got my 1ghzt 256ram Dell Schlaptop! - Can't do Preview quality. Needs to be set to best. Any Thoughts?

You can resize it, or just use "(Full)" preview size from the dropdown menu instead of "(Auto)" size.

Hi. I realise the achievable framerate is system dependent (and also dependent in what effects are applied). What I was talking about was the sharpness of the picture even when looking at a single frame. When I don't undock the preview window, the picture on the external monitor is really horrible, but if I detach it and make it full size the external picture is very nice.

Haven't tried settings in between "small" and "full size" but I assume the quality is related to the amount of upscaling required.

Hi Grazie. I understand about allocating a track for an event. The problem is that I can't find an Fx called Motion Blur. I have Linear, Quick and Radial Blur, but no Motion. The only way I can see to apply a Motion Blur is as an envelope to the Video Bus track, but this affects all the video tracks together.

So, if it is really possible, can you please describe how to apply Motion Blur to a single event or track? Thanks.

I too have a choppy monitor output. I tried your tip without success. What does it for me is a CTRL B command and the external monitor image becomes perfect.
Weird thing: the same clip in Premiere previews perfectly.

Jaegersing:

I answered this in this re: muting motion blur in the other thread. You can bypass the motion blur for the tracks on which you do NOT want motion blur.

Having the manual is almost mandatory - to really get the amazing depth of the program.

But the CD version is not totally complete, as SoFo in their infinite wisdom and willingness to respond to us...
has put up a site where you can make revisions and suggestions to the manual.

So they are continually in a state of free update - pretty nice.

(and they actually TOOK one of my suggestions! Listen up AVID...)

I looked but couldn't find it. Where is the site you referred to where you can make revisions and suggestions to the manual?

Thanks

Hi Frenchy. Thanks for repeating that. I missed the implication of what you were saying the first time, but I get it now. Yes that will work for what I need.

Hi Dennis. I tried the "Full" setting before I got my external monitor working, but didn't persevere with it because it prevented me from seeing the whole picture on my small preview window. Now that you mention it, (and now that I can use the external monitor) this will be more convenient than undocking the preview window, as I can see more of the timeline while editing.

Thanks!

Hi

Can i use Pinnacle Pro One as the editing/ Preview card ?
VIDEOGRAM wrote on 4/30/2003, 9:51 AM
Randy,

I should have written SHIFT B instead of CTRL B.
SHIFT B renders the selection for the preview.

Can anyone say whether using a Canopus box vs a digital camcorder will improve the frame rate? I get very poor results using external monitor going through my camcorder. Any filters or fx tend to slow it down to an unusable state. This is on a P4 1.8ghz machine. However using the video preview window on the computer at 360x240 in preview mode works fine.

Thanks,
