Tips for editing made easy

I am a new comer to editing video and I am wondering, with all the talent and experience out there, what might be some tips that the experinced editors could offer in order to make editing easier. Recently I Unlocked Ignore Event Grouping, made my edits and never bothered to turn it back on. I quickly found out how easily the sound can be thrown off sync from the video. :-( So I said to myself, wouldn't it be neat to have experienced users contribute to a post where tips could be accumulated about editing. It may save hours of re-editing to some poor soul.

The best tip I could give you is to either buy the manual when it comes out, or have it printed out at your local copy store (usually cheaper than buying it), keep it right next to your computer, and read it as much as possible, everything you need to know is in there, and if you get to something that you are stuck on and can't figure out how to do, post a message here and I can pretty much guarantee anything you need to do, someone has already done and can help you.

I appreciate what you're saying because I did print the manual and it is sitting next to me but I guess reading it would not have warned me about my potential "mistake".

If I understood Steve672 correctly sometimes reading the manual doesn't always lead you to the answer you are looking for. There are so many options, effects, mixtures etc. that it is often difficult to find that eleusive effect etc. that you want.

Many people here have offered hints, veg files and so forth in helping others. Of course you can do a search through the forum but that can be a bit hit & miss. So what about a Hints & Tips forum that each one can be listed and easily found. Probably not an easy task to do but there must be someone out there with the knowledge to undertake it.

Shorthand... a <g> is a grin. :; a wink, :-) smile, so on. They are frequently called a smiley. I used to have a real long list on one of my web sites, but that site is gone. This should do:

One thing that I found usefull was to create a shortcut to the PDF version of the user manaul. I started doing this after finding that the one line help just always make it easy to find certain things. You ask it to find a word or phrase, press enter & you might have half a dozen topics listed. You can click onto on of the search results only to find that the word you searched for isn't listed on the displayed page, which means you have to check out each link on the displayed page. Using find in the PDF manual at least takes you to pages where the item you want is displayed & the words are highlighted.
