Title effect

Rv6tc wrote on 3/17/2007, 1:09 PM
For the video that I'm making for my dad's 80th birthday, I want to use a title to introduce a segment where all his grandkids count to 80. It's kind of humorous, and the kids had a good time. I want it to say something like "How much is eighty?" or something akin to that.

I'd like to scroll the text up and have the "eighty" sparkle, or have light rays, or a lens flare or something along those lines to bring it out. I've tried and so far, it all looks kind of weak. Has anyone done anything similar that they could suggest, or ways I haven't thought of to make it look better.

Also.... how do I mask it so that only the line with the word "Eighty" sparkles (or whatever) and the rest of the text remains unaffected? I've tried several different ways, and nothing has worked.

Thanks,

Keith

Without a third party title app like Bluff Titler I don't know how you get the sparkle effect you want... but to create a scrolling title where only one line of the scroll has the effect, here's how I would do it.

Provided the text is no more than 4 or 5 lines I would create one text event with the plain text and a carrage return where the 80 wants to be. Then I would create another text event and put carrage returns where the other text wants to be. Then line up the first event with a key frame putting the text off screen bottom and a last key frame with text offscreen top. Then copy the key frames to the 80 text event and with the two events one over the other they should scroll up together.

Here's a sample Bluff Title animation that has an alpha channel. Maybe it will work for you. After it's on the timeline go to event properties and on the "MEDIA" tab you can change the Alpha Channel to "dirty" The animation is set to loop... but it looks like the sparkles might need some work.

80.avi

WMP may not play this AVI but Vegas will.

Thanks, Jim. I would love to have a good titler, but I'd also love to have a new camera. Too many toys....

One question.. is there a quick way to copy all the keyframes? I've been doing it manually, but I remember something in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum that would "copy event attributes" or something and move them in total. I've looked in V.7, and have not found itn yet.

Thanks again.

You can select the event and "CTRL C" then right click on second event and paste attributes. Else, you can select first keyframe, hold shift, select last keyframe, then do CTRL C and paste all keyframes to next event at one time.

BTW, Bluf Titler is only $50, you can download a demo as well.

I'll tell you what, because it's your dad's 80th, if you'd like, scroll through the Bluff Titler gallery, and if you find one you like, let me know which one it is, and what text you want it to say, and I'll make it and send it to you.

Bluff Gallery

Thank you very much... that's very kind.

I think what I'll do is figure out how to do something to spice up a simple scroll. It really isn't central to the story, and since I'm not familair with Bluff, it'd be hard for me to explain what to do. I looked and didn't see anything in the gallery that was exactly what I wanted.

I think I can do somehting with a lense flare or light rays that will be close enough. This is for family and some older friends, so even basic text would work for them. I just want to do the best job that I can.

Again, thank you. That's "above and beyond".

Here are a few title ideas that I've picked up at various places. I think you'll find more over at VASST. You might be able to adapt one of them to get you what you want. Simplest thing would be to modify one of these VEG files until you get what you want. Save that, and then drop that VEG file into your existing project.

Here's the link (good for seven days):

Title Ideas Using Nothing But Vegas

Thanks John,

I think I can adapt the "XT logo" title (the "UFO" one) to do something like I was thinking of.

Appreciate the link.

John,

Can you please refresh/repost the link to your title ideas?

I came across this thread a bit late, past the seven day expiration, and am interested in what you've done.

Thanks,

Keith

Just a thought from way out there.
Decades ago when I shot my first movie we did a text effect in camera. The text was Letraset on black card, we soaked the card in kero, rolled camera and lit the cardboard. Worked quite well.

So for some sparkling text, sparklers are very cheap. Stick them into some black card on foamcore to make the "80", light sparklers and roll camera. With a little care and planning you could composite the sparkles over Vegas generated "80". Heck you could pull a luminance key off one sparkler and duplicate it to make the numbers etc.

What I like about these practical approaches is they get you off your butt and out in the frsh air.

Bluff Titler has a "show" named "Sparkles.BT"

It provides an attractive changing color sparkle effect,
