Titling Plug-Ins

Movick wrote on 4/14/2006, 1:22 PM
Hello All,

I have been a Vegas user for some time now, and I would like to add more dynamic titling to my work. Are there any titling plug-ins which will give me the capabilities of Final Cut Pro’s “Live Type?”

Also, any suggestions for some good transitions plug-ins such as dissolves, etc. I find Vegas to be a bit limited with the built-in transitions.

Thanks in Advance,

Movick

I bought a Mac Mini, Final Cut Xpress, just for livetype. _Once you have it, it seems very limited_ with only a few expensive (for me) livefonts coming from 12inch and screen caffeine. For the livefonts, they seem to get old really quick..

For better type, I would:

1. Use the great plugs that Spot mentioned. (Boris Red/Graffiti/??Blue?? is great once you learn it-see Instant Boris Effects from VASST)

2. Get WildFX Pro and export as AVI(alpha) Lots of dynamic incompatible swfs. This is a great alternative to live type 'effects' If I could only get them to believe that adding a timeline would rock.

3. Get swishMAX. (has a timeline, but not as many effects)

4. Bauhaus Mirage (called something different now) + Oasis (great particle stuff/write on/much more)

5. Find a copy of India Pro (what livetype was before Apple got wind of it and ported to OS9/OSX, and chopped off x86 support (kinda funny that they now have to add the code back in now with the Intel Macs.)

Your mileage will vary. Just what I have done to jazz up my video type effects.

And don't forget Bluff Titler for some great stand-alone 3D titling effects.

It's not a plug in, but I've been really impressed with the text animation presets in After Effects 7.0. I've been playing around with the free tryout.

Of course, it's pricier than some of the text-only options, but because it's AE, it does much, much more. If I'm going to invest money, time and brain cells in learning new software, I'd rather it be for tools that can do a variety of things, rather than for only a very specialized application.

Is anyone using Bluff Titler? I had this program for my Amiga long ago. The feature set on their website seems impressive. However I note the following disclaimer:

Transparency
Vegas does not automatically recognize the alpha (transparency) channel in the AVI files. When you right-click on the clip in Vegas and choose Properties you can set the Alpha Channel. In Vegas, there are 3 choices for how to handle alpha channels:

Straight (unmatted): this option does not seem to work.
Premultipled: this option works somewhat, but there are blue edges and things are not looking quite right.
Premultipled (dirty): this option works the best, maybe perfect.

Peculiarities
Vegas 5 refuses to import files from a path containing the word "TITLE" - all uppercase. If ANY or ALL of the letters are lowercase, there is no problem reading or finding the file. Change the directory name, or move the file in question and you should not have any problems opening it.

Does Vegas 6 correct any of these problems? If the program cannot export transparent backgrounds for overlays, I'm guessing it's not the right choice for Vegas users, unless the one option they say "works" is good enough. Anyone?

Re: transparency and Bluff Titler- premultiplied (dirty) works fine in Vegas, IMO. Never had a problem with it.

I just rendered a file in Bluff Titler and called it "TITLE" and saved it to a folder called "TITLE" - I'm using Vegas 6.0d and it had no problem at all opening the file, completely as normal.

BT still warns you if you render a file with the name Title and refers to the Vegas 5 bug.

I think it is a great piece of software.

Cheers

I rendered using the targa sequence since Vegas works well with that. It handles the transparency well. I have used the targa image sequence for Particle Illusion SE also.

I really like Bluff Titler. Plus you can use it as a screen saver. I didnt even know this I just happened to notice it available in my screen saver list. Very fun! Titles look great and it has some particle stuff too.

Check out Zaxwerks ProAnimator. It's a standalone product that's got tons of very cool presets that can be easily modifed and saved as new presets. It's very easy to learn and the quality is great. It costs more than Bluff Titler but it's well worth it.

Don't confuse Pro Animator with InvigoratorPro..that's a plugin for After Effects. ProAnimator does amazing things and the quality is first rate.

Check it out here: http://zaxwerks.com/proanimator/index.shtml

Really gotta go to the Bluff Gallery at Bluff Gallery and check out their expanding set of customer generated effects. You can download the project files and appropriate media if required. Very Cool. Darryl

As of two months ago, Zaxwerks ProAnimator is now both a standalone and a plug-in in one product.

This makes it immensely more useable.

For some projects, standalone is better.

For others, using it as an AE plug-in is way better.

If you have to buy it, get a substantial discount at NAB :O)

Also try exploring what Vegas can do by itself. Boris Graffiti or RED can also do anything you can't do in Vegas. You can find that you can also get some 3D looks and light sweeps going in Vegas once you know how "all" the tools work and interact. Save them as presets and veg files for easy recall in the future. Many of us have posted tutorials and veg files over the last five years showing how do a lot of things. Disect veg files from other people to learn how it was done.
