To all the Neesayers

In the midst of my little teaching session yesterday my 'student' was relating how last week he was dragged in by one of his old employers for the revival of one of his tele series, lots of press coverage etc.
Anyway they took him on the guided tour of the facilities, all the latest gear one can only dream of, Euphonics desks everywhere, plenty of Smokes, every studio and more with Genelec monitors. Standing in the midst of all this largess someone asked him he still dabbled in the movie making business. He rather meekly replies "Yeah, I just bought a copy of Vegas".
Now I can tell you 12 months ago the reply would have been "You bought WHAT?", Six month ago it might have been "Oh dear". But now it's "Good choice, that stuff is great and it's getting better".
I've also noticed trolling around many forums not directly connected to Vegas that a very sizable chunk of the users are now Vegas users, on one of them there were a few macolites trying to shout them down, it seems to me that Vegas is not only starting to be taken very seriously by the industry but it's starting to put a blowtorch to a few bellies.
No, I'm not for a minute suggesting it's ever going to compete with things like Smoke but at least even those who work at that level know about the product and it's finally getting the respect it deserves.

So in the midst of all the "why haven't we got this yet" and "This is what I WANT in V6" kind of posts I'd like to be the odd man out and say well done to the Vegas team.
Bob.

I wanted to say something similar, but with my lack of credentials it wouldn't have meant much.

As annoying as it sounds to hear sony pro shops not having heard of vegas, i keeps me feeling special.

I think the issue goes back to the days of SoFo. The various local agents invested considerable time marketing the product and it'd be sad if they had the product lines taken off them.
You have much the same situation with the cameras, the VX2100 is sold here through the various Sony outlets and the PD170 through the pro distributors. And in the end I get a much better price on Sony consummer and pro gear by going outside the official Sony network and no I'm not talking ger imports, all the stuff still has Sony Australia stickers all over it. I'd be prepared to pay $50 more for the peace of mind of buy from a pro outfit with their own techs but $400 is getting a bit steep.

"Neesayers" ? Hmmm....

I will be the ODDEST man out here . . "why haven't we got this yet" and "This is what I WANT in V6" kind of posts I'd like to be the odd man out and say well done to the Vegas team. . . and say, Bob, that maybe, just maybe it is our "wishes" for things to improve - evidenced by the gumsmacking that does go on - that makes Vegas and the Good Guys & Gals in the backroom, get the feedback and ides well in advance and formed for the next UG . .maybe it is already too late for V6 or even V7 for that matter . .maybe V8? But come on Bob, I for one aint no "Naysayer" and I don't think that I am "someone with an aggressively negative attitude" .

Continual improvement is the way to go. But if you don't know, you wont fix it! . . I want thumnails in the Vegas Explorer . . please?

. . 'umble enough? . ..

Grazie ;-)

Hey - I'll be getting a ZU1 from the local Sony Pro folks - if they don't know about Vegas yet - they will soon!

Bob - great post. I will always be thankful for Vegas ahead of making requests for improvements.
I'm sure Sony happily listen to ideas from users as well as their own team.

Happy now Grazie :)
OK, now I'll have my winge, if they dant git a spalling chequer on this forum soon I'm gonna by a G5, so there.

Believe me I wasn't having a shot at anyone, of course the engineers need our feedback, I do a bit of software development myself, nothing as full on as Vegas but at the end of the day the ONLY thing that matters are the users and one thing I've learned, it doesn't matter how smart the code is, if those trying to use it don't get it then your efforts are all for nothing.
But at the same time the thing that keeps me going is when a user rings me up just to say thanks and how much easier I've made their day. Now we all pay good money for this product but it's still people who write the stuff and I know for a fact no one does this just for the money, sure the dollars count but the odd "well done guys" is priceless.
Bob.

Hi Bob

A very nice and positive story about Vegas from one of your students.

A while back, I had a FAST Video NLE editing system, which cost me around Aus$75K in 1996. I thought this was the ultimate in NLE systems at the time.

As we all know, as time goes by, technology gets dated.

I had been a long time member of the FAST Video forum, and the folks there started to to talk about Vegas Video 3.0 as as great NLE solution to transition to from the FAST NLE. I should add that the majority of forum members were small to medium production houses like myself.

I wasn't impressed by the "Vegas Video" name, but decided to Give Vegas Video 3.0 a whirl.

I was very impressed by the intuitive nature of Vegas Video, and have been a very happy user since, as I know other FAST NLE users have been.

I now use Vegas 5.0, Sound Forge 7.0, and have just ordered ACID 5.0.

My poor old FAST NLE is sitting unused in my Granny flat, and is about to take a trip to the local garbage dump.

So Sony, keep up the great work, you have a terrific editing solution in your product portfolio.

What FAST outfit did u get? I was using a FAST FPS60, and some software called Video Action Pro... basically a waste of money, dealing with dropped frames and silly buffer software as bandaid fixes was anything but fun to use. It was a lower end capture card but we were still working our SVHS edit suite.

Hi bob, i was just curious as to how long you've been using vegas for and what did u use before it? I ask not to question your credentials but you were here when i started using vegas a couple of years agor and was just wondering...

Hard to remember how long it's been, Think at least two years, when I got it I think it I downloaded a trial version of V3 and then they offered us V4 at a discount.
What do I use it for, well, most of my income comes from editing audio, LOTS of stuff like remastering. Mostly spoken word that was orginally cut for cassette that's now being released onto CD. On top of that I do a lot of mp3 encoding as well for the same client. I also author a LOT of DVDs, around 200 in the last month, mostly just football matches so they're a bit of a no brainer but then last week I did a demo DVD for a cover band. And I do a few corporate DVDs, biggest job was a four language effort, recorded the audio in my 'living' room. well that's what the good lady thinks it is, I've got other ideas!
I started out using MGI Video Wave, don't laugh I still dust it of from time to time!, tried Avid Express and gave that a big miss, then Premiere, cut 80% of one of my travel DVD with it and then gave up and bought Vegas.
I use Vegas, SF7 and CDA and love them all!

It was the Fast Video Machine. It was their high end NLE until they released the Liquid Silver and Liquid Blue series.

The FAST product line was eventually bought out by Pinnacle.

I have to say that I was very pleased with the Video Machine. Very intuitive interface, just like Vegas. It had hardware acceleration, and was powered by, if I remeber correctly, an Intel 233Mhz MMX processor.
