to make it perfect (for me)

CD4 was perfection in its simplicity whereas 5.0 seems to be trying to be all things to all people (at least in my non-professional opinion) In my humble view what would make a 5.0 version of CD Arch perfect (for me) would be the following.

1. KEEP EVERYTHING 4.0 HAD (this means the individ volume envelopes and thus the ability to edit crossfade and volume points)

2. ADD IN VOLUME METER (which 5.0 did)
SIDE NOTE: before i had to open all my music files into Sonic Foundry 5.0 to edit volume levels of each individual song manually...with indiviual volume envelopes (as in 4.0) and the volume meters (as in 5.0) i could accomplish this with one program and on the fly by simply 'eyeballing' the peak volumes on indvid song tracks and slide the individual volume bar up and down as needed.

3.MAKE IT STAND ALONE (which 5.0 did)

4. EDIT WINDOW: provide a bottom window in which you can simply 'drag' a song into to to add effects or tweak levels ...then save...then simply drag back into its location on the time line.

5.ADD OPTION FOR A SECOND TIME LINE
SIDE NOTE: this would be below the first MAIN time line (much in the way of Acid Pro but only two time lines would be nessary i think) so adding sound effects or voice overs could be done easier by simply sliding them into place and auditioning the total sound and sliding it again if not perfect etc....I've done many themed CD's where Ive added cartoon quips or halloween sounds either within the song itself or as transitions between songs to make them more 'fun' it would be easier with a second time line to do this.

anyway enough rambling...if any comments about this you want to share or slam me about.....currysteph@aol.com

my 2 cents

Disagree with (4) - that's what I have SForge for.

... and (5) - that's what I have Vegas for.

While I do welcome the 'mastering' additions (individual dx chains)I feel that these other suggestions would take it away from it's original (and newly enhanced) purpose, and make it a hodge-podge (sp ?) ..

As I've stated in another thread, we'll be addressing the editable crossfade issue using a second track, not by adding event envelopes (for reasons I stated elsewhere). This will give you the level of control you had in CDA4 for editing levels in the crossfade, for each song independently, as well as keeping the easy auto-crossfade functionality, both within the same project. You'll be able to accomplish everything you could do in CDA4, envelope and mix-wise. We hope to have an update to the public beta before the end of the month.
