To sum up... key points.

Hello,

I'll try to be as accurate as I can. Here is what happens to me:

I'm with Vegas Video 3.0c and when I preview a video from the "media tool" or the "trimmer" I can see the video in the preview window (preview quality mode) smoothly, perfect. But when I drag the same video from the "media tool" or the "trimmer" to the timeline and then I place the cursor at any part of the event and hit PLAY, I can not see a smooth video in the preview window. The video is quite jerky (13-14 fps) but the sound is right. It's very noticeable when the video show pans and tilts. The video has NO EFFECT and NO TRANSITION at all, just the same video from the "trimmer". I'm not previewing the video in an external monitor, just in the screen. I think that I have the minimum requirements to view a smooth video:

I'm with:

- AMD Athlon XP 1800+ MHz
- 512 Mb DDR RAM
- Matrox Millenium G550 dualhead graphic card
- HD Seagate 80 Gb, ATA100, 7200 rpm. NTFS formatted.
- Sound Blaster Audigy 1394 Firewire
- Windows XP Pro.

The project format is same than the video. I go to "project properties" and hit the Match Media Settings button in the upper right of the video tab.

So, my settings are:

- DV PAL, 720x576; 25 fps; interlaced
- audio: stereo; 16bits; 48 KHz.
- Lower field first.
- Rendering quality: best.
- I have SQUARE pixels turned off.
- Preview window config: "preview quality", "half size". If I set to "draft quality" the frame rate is still 13-14 fps.
- I defragged the hard disk.
- The video has been captured through a firewire port using the "Scenalizer Live" software, and it was shot using a Sony DCR-TRV20E miniDV camcorder.

I see smooth video when I open it with Windows Media Player in Windows XP Pro, I see smooth video when working with Adobe Premiere 6.02 too. And I see good video when opened from the "trimmer" window in Vegas Video . But I get 14-16 fps in the "preview window" when I play the event from the timeline.

- I re-installed Vegas Video and the problem is still the same.

I discovered a weird thing:

** In the "RATE" slider, if I keep the little yellow triangle at "1" (normal speed) the video is jerky in the preview window (13-14 fps), but if I move the triangle to 1,16 (almost normal speed) the video is 25 fps!! So, in conclusion, in order to get 25 fps I have to put the slider at any value except "1". 1,16 or 0,99 works as well. Is there any way to put the slider at 1,01 for example. I prefer editing while whatching the video at "1,16" speed and 25 fps than whatching the video at "1" speed but only 13 fps.

I know that some people is having the same problem, but we can't sort it out yet. By the way, If I preview the video from an external monitor, the problem is still de same. You can read this post in the Vegas Video forum:

I can't think of what I'm doing wrong...

Please, any responses will be greatly appreciated ! Thanks.

Good summary from my point of view, thats exatctly what I am experiencing. Only difference in my setup is, that I do use external monitor and that I captured with Vegas Capture application.
In addition to "media tool" and "trimmer" also the "Print to Tape" works fine.

My Hardware:
ASUS P4B266-E, P4 1800, 512 MB
Matrox G550
Soundblaster Audigy Player IEEE-1394
seperate disk for video
WinXP Pro
Sony DCR-TRV20E

You guys should be able to get timeline playback of captured PAL DV clips at a rock solid 25fps.

1) Is your project set to the unmodified PAL DV template (it should be)

2) If you capture the DV clips with SF Video Capture, do you see any difference in performance?

OK I messed around with this a bit for grins...

I was using a 10 sec. clip I rendered into PAL DV from a NTSC DV clip. (Should be OK for testing)

FWIW,

With the preview window undocked:

I get full framerate, unless I right-click to display at project size, then click back to sub-project size. Then framerate runs slow until I manually resize the preview window. Then I get full framerate. In fact, the video will not switch from project size to sub-project size until I manually resize the frame.

With the preview window docked:

right-click to project size and back would properly resize, but framerate reduces unless I undock and re-dock the viewer (half size maintained framerate).

NTSC clip/project shows similar framerate issues, but will resize properly when undocked.

I don't have my NTSC monitor hooked up at this time, so all tests were on computer display.

Perhaps there is a clue in there, or some variables for you folks to toy with to find a workaround.

1) yes I have tested with the unmodified PAL DV template

2) I have used SF Video Capture.

sonicEPM,

1) yes I have tested with the unmodified PAL DV template too.

2) I do not have used SF Video Capture. I have used Scenalizer Live because I can't capture with VV3.0. But I do not think this is the problem. The video it's there, it doesn't matter where has it come from.

In order to fix the jittery playback from the timeline I finally decided to format my HD enterely and then I installed only WIN XP PRO and VV3.0c. I captured some clips using the VV capture soft (it works now). Then I played the clips from the "trimmer" and from the "media tool" flawlessly. I dragged one clip on the timeline and hit play: STILL THE SAME PROBLEM !!! JITTERY PLAYBACK ALL THE TIME -> 15-16 fps. The problem is exactly the same as it was before formatting the HD (Please look the first post for a detailed description). To be honest, I don't know what happens at all !

I uninstalled VV3.0c and then I installed VV3.0. I played a clip from the timeline and the frame rate is still 15-16 fps. If I play the clip at a double speed (rate=2) I get 25 fps, so the computer is fast enough. But when I play the clip at normal speed I only get 14 or 15 or 16 fps.

Please SonicEMP and other experts, I think that now you have a very detailed description of my problem. Would you mind helping me to detect the problem if possible ??

Thanks!
