It's amazing the power that we carry around in our pockets every day. Whether iPhone or Android, the ability to shoot high quality HD video whenever and wherever we want without having to think, "did I bring my camera" is just liberating.

Thanks for sharing that. I enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the production challenges of using small form devices as a main camera.

Hope they do another episode with (say) Android devices, to counter the Apple brainwashing.

I would have thought it highly appropriate that show would have been recorded using Apple toys.

Well, technically we do carry money in our pockets and that is the power on display here, the power of money.

I personally find it disgusting and should be illegal ( false advertising ). It's obvious Apple paid them to do this and it's also misleading. iPhone shoots crap video and there's no way you'll get a decent looking show out of it without a ton of proper lighting and other stuff, something your average consumer does not carry around in his/her pocket.

That and I would also guess that most of the show was shot with real cameras and made to look like it was shot with iPhones.

Always remember; Joan Rivers posted on her Facebook how much she was enjoying her new iPhone, 10 days after her death. It's all bull$hit folks.

Of course, just looked at it. Title says "the entire episode shot on IOS devoces"

First sentence of the article says"almost entire episode"

Further down it says: "The fact that the shots were not discernible from those filmed with the show’s TV-standard cameras is just further evidence....."

Just proves what I'm saying above. My guess almost none of it was shot using IOS devices.

And I'm guessing that neither one of you actually saw the Modern Family episode tonight so you don't actually know what you're talking about.

It appeared that a large portion of it was very likely shot using iPad and iPhone cameras. Sure, it was lit well because it's a network TV show and they have a professional DP and an entire lighting crew at their disposal. Yeah, it was a 22-minute Apple product placement show and Apple no doubt paid handsomely for it. So what? Basically, the entire show took place on Claire's MacBook screen, it was actually kind of amusing and cleverly done. I'm not at all a fan of Apple by any stretch, but I enjoyed the show.
deusx wrote on 2/26/2015, 3:39 AM
I know exactly what I'm talking about.

They say they used regular TV cameras, so what else do you need? The guy writing that blog is a liar just like everybody else connected to Apple.

Apple has done this before, 95% of it was shot using the usual equipment, 5% shot using some iCrap so they can claim they used it. Normally shot footage was edited to simulate iPhone, iPad look and that's it.

When you're caught lying at least a couple of dozen times ( Apple and those fiascos like Joan Rivers' paid for Facebook post ), I'm sorry you lose all credibility. Maybe Joan Rivers will post on her Facebook how much she liked this episode.

"I know exactly what I'm talking about."

In this case, you don't.

I was talking to a cinematographer friend of mine in Hollywood tonight and I mentioned the Modern Family episode and it turns out that her roommate does makeup on Modern Family, she was on the set for most of the shoots and they actually did use iPhone 6 cameras and an iPad and a MacBook Pro. She said the shots with Claire in the airport were done on a blue screen but she wasn't on the set and can't say definitively that an iPhone was used for that. The episode was shot months ago.

My friend said that the episode was edited using Avid Media Composer and Adobe After Effects was used to simulate the computer screen where the whole episode takes place.

I guess that settles that.
deusx wrote on 2/26/2015, 6:57 PM
No, it does not settle anything.

Brian Williams was there too and he swears they used his iPhone.

And Steven Levitan ( Modern family executive producer ) was with Brian Williams in Iraq what they got shot down, true, just ask Steven, he also has footage from that incident on his iPhone.
GeeBax wrote on 2/26/2015, 7:13 PM
I heard that Kim Kardashian was on the set but they had to use a real camera because the iPhone could not get a wide enough shot to fit her backside in.

Now that we see more and more iPhone & iPad videos being excepted as usable footage on TV shows and many news story's I'm offering a new wedding package using iPhones & iPads.

The new package will consist of having your friends and relatives shoot your wedding day with their iPhones and iPads, then select the best footage from up to 25 cameras and we will professionally edited your wedding day.

My weekends will now be free. I'll be saving thousands of dollars on audio and video equipment no longer needed for the shoot. I will also save by not needing to hire a second or third camera person.

As far as editing goes having up to 25 different angles on the timeline will make editing a breeze. How much better can it get.

Yes the footage might be dark, shaky and have poor audio at times but that's the way it goes when you have friends and relatives shooting for you.

Here are 3 weddings clips shot with iPhones.

"No, it does not settle anything."

You have a cynical opinion and I talked with someone who was actually there and she had no reason to lie to me. They shot it with iPhones using professional camera people under highly controlled lighting conditions. The premise of the show was that it all took place on a MacBook screen with the characters using Facetime video chat, the didn't have to look like it was shot with a professional camera, it had to look like it was shot with an iPhone. In order to get the look, they used iPhones. What exactly is so difficult to believe about this? Did you actually see the show?

>>They shot it with iPhones<<

Probably.. but is what you saw on TV from the iPhones?
Cliff Etzel wrote on 2/27/2015, 11:06 AM
I just received the firmware update to my Lumia 1520 that now allows for shooting stills in DNG and can shoot video in 2k and 4k. Given that I already have a GoPro 4 that can shoot 4K and now can use the phone as another option for specific shooting situations.

It won't replace professional grade acquisition tools but it does provide another option for what I shoot on a regular basis (POV with mounting hardware on a bicycle handle bar for example)

"Probably.. but is what you saw on TV from the iPhones?"

YES, like I said, a makeup artist who was on the set for most of the production of this specific episode said that it was shot with iPhone 6 smartphones. I personally heard her say this. How much more proof do you need?

Series creator, Steve Levitan, said that instead of using ridiculously expensive cameras to shoot the episode and then run it through a process to make it look exactly like an iPhone, they chose to just use iPhones. Plus, I'm guessing that Apple paid them a lot of money to do it, it was probably the most blatant product placement in history.

Edit: Apparently, Apple paid them nothing.

So does this mean that the next time a network exec tells me that my Z5 and x70 are not up to broadcast spec. I can just laugh and tell him that I'll shoot the next great sit-com on an iphone?

John_Cline wrote on 2/27/2015, 11:00 PM
No, it does not. The entire premise of this episode was that ALL of it took place on the screen of a MacBook. All of the actors appeared as though they were using the Apple Facetime video conferencing app, since it was supposed to look like they were using iPhones, they just went ahead and used iPhones. Did none of you actually see the episode?
mountainman wrote on 2/27/2015, 11:17 PM
Yes I watched a couple of minutes. Still does not change the fact that if you walk into abc and tell them your going to use a z5 for a network show you'd be able to hear them laughing all the way out the door! The "broadcast spec" is just a convenient way to keep us lowlifes out of their hair. trust me if you video taped martians landing on the Whitehouse steps, using a Flip cam, it would be good enough for broadcast.

ushere wrote on 2/28/2015, 12:49 AM
frankly i'll watch anything that interests me, even if it's shot on mountainman's flip cam ;-)
can't comment on this particular program since i watched one early episode and wrote it off...

as for z5 and broadcast, well i've shot stuff as stringer that's gone to national broadcasters - not martians landing mind you, but short local pieces. of course, since there's no 'national' broadcaster reps out in the boondocks, they'll take what they can in the name of 'local' coverage.

>>>Edit: Apparently, Apple paid them nothing. <<<

Had Joan Rivers not died before iPhone came out people would have believed her Facebook post to be genuine. Embarrassingly for Apple she did die and they forgot about that pre-paid/pre-written scheduled Facebook post about how she loved her new iPhone and it came out. There are many more examples, but I come back to this one because I think everybody can agree that dead people cannot use iPhones.

It's all bull$hit. You can't trust anything any more. It's not being cynical it's just the way things are now.

I agree it is possible they shot most of it with iPhones because it looks bad, but my main point about this being nothing more than a gimmicky product placement stands. And the fact that in the same pocket you can't carry all of the pro lighting hardware and technicians required to pull off even video this bad, I think that is pretty clear, no?
