Yes Paul, it sounds like you're probably using a
cheap sound card. Vegas is a pro piece of software, except
that it let's you use non pro hardware with it to
accommidate every budget. Since you make the correlation
between Vegas and Sound Forge, here's what you need to
check. When you arm a track for recording, the fader on
that track turns to an input adjustment fader. It's
possible that you have this fader turned too far up and it
is over boosting your noise floor level of your sound
card. I made this mistake in the past and turned the level
up to 100%, then I realized later that when I did that it
actually raised the level on my Event Gina Sound card mixer
input level to +26dB, nowhere near the optimal 0dB setting
that I intended. I adusted that fader to 60.3 (I believe
this is a percentage of maximum volume not an actual dB
adjustment) and have not had to adjust this fader since. I
guess 60% is about 0dB for my soundcard.
