Topic posting reminder?

Now that this forum has a new look maybe it's time to look at other features for it. Back in the old days when I looked at the Pinnacle forums they had a feature that sometime was very useful particulary if the thread was about a topic that didn't get many postings.

If you saw a topic that was of interest & you wished to be sure you didn't miss any future postings about this thread, you had the option of clicking an icon that requested that you be sent an email whenever a new posting came from that thread.

This could be a pain it you put the request against everything you looked at as you could be flooded with emails but if it was about a less popular topic that wasn't likely to get many replies it could be of real benefit since you didn't have to remember to scroll through pages of older postings just to see IF there were any more replies.

Clicking on the link in the email took you straight to the new posting.

I agree. If SoFo/Sony is uprading the site, it would be great if they could upgrade the software used to run the forum. Other features that would be nice:

* A place to upload images/video to aid the disucssion

* A way to completely block all posts by any particular user. We seem to have a few new users that continuously violate SoFo's own rules regarding bad language and offensive behavior, but SoFo is taking a hands off policy. We should be able, therefore, to at least handle the situation ourselves. Most other forums let you report offensive behavior to a moderator.

* Avatars. Cute gimmick, but it can add to the fun.

* Get posting times in your local time. Most boards let you specify your offset from UTC (Universal Time Coordinates) so all the times will read out in your local time.

* Simpler encoding of format characters. I know how to embedd HTML tags for italic and bold and for URL links, but it would be nice to have this handled by the host software. Many forums have a little toolbar that appears above the box where you enter the text, and you can click on "bold," "italic," etc.

JM - yes to all of that! - PLUS, plus, plus : When I have posted a reply on a thread, I would really like the actual Forum List to show that I've "visited" that thread by greying it out - as per normal. But, what we get is that there is a post that is unread - ie it remains BLACK. I know I've read the latest post, because i wrote it!!!

I really find this infuriating. I have to re-enter the same thread and exit it immeadiately to show the thread as having been read . . silly . ..

Doesn't happen on other Forums I lurk about on - ho, with the exception of the COW site - I think? Doesn't happen on the DVinfo forum . . .please can we have this recitfied in this spanking new site .. PRETTY PLEASE!!

Grazie

Good idea Grazie...

Another thing to add is an area that says who was the last person to post. (It says how many posts, who posted it, etc...)

Hiyah Stiffy!

Yeah - DVinfo.net has a superb way of treating what you speak of.

Stiffs - got your email, you gonna do your laptop posting hereabouts?

Grazie

Actually I could do without avatars. They usually don't indicate anything valuable and most of the time they just end up being a rip off from someone elses creation. (ie, images from star wars, matrix, etc, anything someone might have been impressed by in the past and can get a photo of it)

If people wold come up with their own image, then that would be cool, but most avatars don't appear to be creative.

And besides it just adds to the load time of the page.
