Oh! So if anyone's really curious about what happened, we did figure it out.

There was a half hour power outage. All those PCs had nearly dead CMOS batteries. The power outage lasted just long enough to drain them and then the CMOS settings reset. When a mass rollout of PCs is done like that at the school we set up one first, then clone to all the rest. Well, someone took a shortcut this time and cloned an old installation rather than creating a new one. And, the old installation used ACHI instead of SATA/IDE. When CMOS reset and the power came back on they all tried to boot up from an ACHI port, and hence died.

The elementary library looked just the same. So, all set up and operational again, and we have several cases of CR2032 batteries on order. Just a reminder, if your computer is more than 4 years old you should probably consider replacing the battery before you end up with something like this.
