I just cannot open avis with mpeg layer III streams inside (in VV3c). In fact I can but i get no audio. I have similar problem with MPEG4 avis - only M$ mpeg4 & divx3 avis are opening properly (no video in divx5 xvid...). The program says: "Could not read stream attributes" (audio and/or video). I'v installed several video codecs (divx5, xvid, ffdshow(decoder)) and audio (acm, dshow filters). Nothing works!
All the videos are usable on other video editing software (demo of Premiere 6) Using WinXP.
Question: Do i need a special plugin/decoder 4 vegas video???
*/
OK the main problem is "cannot import avis with mp3 audio streams inside"
Here is an example of Summary tab (4 salad):

Avis that cannot be inported (no sound, nor video)
Audio:
Format MPEG Layer-3 (Speed is 159kb/s i.e.)
Video:
Compression XVID or DivX Codec
(Personally I don't think that MJPEG codec would help here)

Avis that can be imported to VV without problems:
Audio:
Format DivX WMA Audio V2
Video:
Compression DIVXMPG4 V3

These files were not made by me, but I'm pretty sure that they were made with VDub (most of them)

Quote (salad):
The reason I ask, is MANY have complained about VV not being able to import an AVI, when in fact it was a DivX file with an .avi file extension. Check that.

What do You mean by DivX file? A .mp4 file or .DivX file? AFAIK DivX files are in fact avis encoded with DivX compressor. The structure of file is very similar to other avis.

BTW I have VERY big problems posting to this forum due to (?) network lag

Hi, the trouble you describe sounds like what I went through a while back. The problem is a codec confusion. For me the problem was with any program that tried to read an avi. I'm sorry but I don't remember the exact details about what codec was wrong or what was mixed up, but the key to my solution was something Avery Lee wrote VirtualDub's knowledge base. You may also want to try the virtual dub user forum http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php .

There is also a codec pack floating around that has a write up on using different avi codecs for audio stuff and it also includes something about virtualdub. There may be a link on the virtualdub users or doom9 site for it.
Good Luck, franco

Thanks Franco! I didn't realize there was a new version of VDub. Just DL'd it!

OK, I rendered a short clip in VV3 to DivX 5(choosing mp3 for the audio), which played fine in WMP, but as expected, only the audio imports back in to VV - the video is black.
I opened this file in VDub, clicked Audio on the too bar - and I see that by default AVI audio and Direct stream copy are selected. Clicked Video and ensured Full Processing Mode was selected. Clicked Audio/Compression and selected Huffyuv for this example(a 3rd party DV codec such as DVSoft, or Uncompressed would also work).
Clicked FILE/Save as .AVI.../entered a file name/set processing to Highest priority and click SAVE. The rendered file imported nicely into VV with video & audio present in the timeline.
This will work with just about ANY .AVI.
This can also be done using TMPGEnc.
Stellar results, obviously, can not be expected, with DivX being highly compressed. Yuck!

If you don't already have it, you can DL Huffyuv here:

Thanx for reply. Recompressing is of course a way to import videos to VV but... the lossless compression (huffyuv) produces big files. One of my videos is 90min long and has a big resolution (somethink about 500x360). Recommpression in VDub will result in a 20GB file. This is not for my hard drive. Recommpression using i.e. mpeg will cause loss of quality. Anyway! I still have problems with mp3 streams :( (must recommpress them too!)

20Gig.....Wow! Yeah, this job might call for a 3rd party DV codec that can be used within VDub or TMPEGnc....like the one from mainconcept.com(not sure of the price), or render out sections at a time. Maybe look for a convenient cut in the audio and video, or a fade to black to use as the split point within VDub/Tmpg.

Might be able to find a FULL functioning/time limited demo(maybe ULEAD...30 days)that can import these files and knock this out in one blow as a DV render???

Good Luck!
