Track Compressor behaves differently on Master than on Track

I have recorded a choir concert at the high school. There are 30 or so songs, each followed by applause. I deal with the volume differences between singing and applause with a volume envelope, and just duck the applause. It's a labor intensive effort.

I am hoping to use the Track Compressor to lower the volume of applause. I applied a soft limiter to the master buss and it works quite well. When I try using it on the audio Track, it has no effect. Is there a switch I have to set to make it work at the track level?

Vegas Pro 13.

Is this a valid way to lower the volume of the applause?

You could use the volume control in the track header along with the envelopes.

Aside from the usual track plug-in chainer switches (right-click= Bypass / Enable / Delete), not sure why the comp is not working on the track. In any case, a volume envelope is the best sounding along with some light compression for the choir.
