Track motion settings deleted when section cut from track

paul-priestley wrote on 2/1/2022, 7:47 AM

Hi, Strange problem with Pro 19 (build 458). If I manually cut a section from a track, the track motion settings for that track revert back to the original settings. It doesn't happen if I manually move an item along the track to close the gap, but this isn't possible in the middle of a video as it would take too much time. The problem happens if I highlight the gap, press delete and CTRL and F or I use smart split or Auto Ripple. Is there a setting or something I have missed to stop a cut overriding Track motion settings.

Set Up - Ryzen 3800x, GTX 1060 6GB, 32 MB ram Windows 10 up to date

Many thanks

Paul

@paul-priestley, turn off the Lock Envelopes to Track button in the bottom timeline toolbar before you delete the event(s).

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the response. The Lock Envelopes to Events button is turned off ( can't find a Lock Envelopes to Track button) but the problem still occurs. I have found a work around by using the Edit - Close Gaps command but this works on only one track at a time.

@paul-priestley maybe I misunderstand the problem then. Can you give a step-by-step repro?

Hi Gary,

Thanks for this. I create art history videos and film myself as the narrator then edit accordingly. This is what I did step by step.

1. I inserted the three narrator video files - MP4 approximately 20 minutes in total - onto one video (narrator track) and one audio track. Audio and video obviously grouped.

2.  Created another video track below containing a solid colour.

3. Chroma Keyed the narrator track using New Blue V6 Chroma Key Pro – used it for years. Used Track Motion to move the narrator to the left and make him slightly smaller. This was all done at track level.

 4. Edited the narrator/audio tracks to remove blips, compressed over long pauses and removed mispronunciations, about 20 edits in all. This was done by cutting or amending the section and then manually closing the gap. This all worked fine and had no effect on the Track Motion settings.

5. Added a nested VEG file at the beginning on new tracks and added title, background and picture tracks. Began to add titles, background images and pictures to those tracks. About 3 minutes in I came across a sentence that, on reflection, wasn’t relevant, so I cut it out. I highlighted the gap and pressed Delete and CTRL F. The gap closed as expected, but the narrator returned to the original position as though Track Motion had not been used. The Keying was unaffected. Yet, I clicked on Track Motion, and it was still indicating the changes I had outlined in section 3, even though they were not now implemented on any of the files on the narrator track.

I clicked the down arrow next to UNDO and the last action was showing as ‘Post-Edit Ripple’. When this was undone the gap obviously reappeared, but also the narrator returned to the edited position set by Track Motion on the whole track - all three files. Effectively, opening the gap reinstalled the Track Motion Settings, closing the gap using the above action removed them.

6. The same problem occurs when using Auto Ripple or Smart Split to remove the sentence edit. But I have found that Close Gaps works - no effect on Track Motion - but only on one track at a time (video first then repeat to move the audio track).

7. The only buttons switched on the bottom timeline toolbar are Enable Snapping and Automatic Crossfades and I am using the Normal Edit Tool.

8. My Graphics card GTX 1060 6GB has the latest drivers installed and my system is running Windows 10 version 20H2. I have not changed any settings in Vegas pro 19 since the update to Build 458.

Thanks for your help.

Paul

@paul-priestley, I'm sorry, I still can't repro your problem. Anyone else have ideas? Can you repro?

Hi,

I have created a test file using the same 3 videos and edited the file as stated above. No problem. So it is not the system or update at fault, there is something amiss on that particular file. I'll have to see if I can find it. It's a shame as there is a couple of days work been completed so far.

Hi, Further tests indicate that the Track Motion has somehow frozen or locked on that track. If I try to change Track Motion the rectangle will move around, but has no effect on the image on the track. Is there anyway of deleting track motion from the track or resetting it in some way? If not I shall have to move things manually as that seems to be the only way to move forward.

Track Motion has somehow frozen or locked on that track

Very strange. The first thing I'd try is to duplicate that track and then see if the Track Motion problem is duplicated along with it or if you then have proper behavior on the Duplicated Track.

The next thing I'd try is to create a new video track and copy just the event's from the original track down to it. Then copy the keyframes from the original track's Track Motion into the new track's Track Motion.

If all of that fails, you could manually recreate the keyframes in a new track.

If all of that fails, then maybe it's a problem with the project file which would be unfortunate. In that case you could at least copy all of your events into a new project instead of starting your edit from scratch again.

@paul-priestley, Also, just a possible thought:

If I try to change Track Motion the rectangle will move around, but has no effect on the image on the track.

Make sure you drag from the inside of the Track Motion rectangle. If you drag from outside of the rectangle, you're only changing your view of the Track Motion window (that is, you're moving your workspace, not the object).

If you know you're doing that correctly, are you able to move it properly by changing the number values in the properties pane at the left instead of dragging the position box?

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the suggestions I had already tried a few of those but it is not resolved. It is obviously just one of those things with that particular track/video file. I can make the changes manually, it's obviously slower but it works. This is the first time in years I have had a problem with the software, so it's not an issue.

Cheers

Paul
