Track pan / Crop softens images

I have a web project (a homepage banner) that is an odd size at 960x328. This is to allow for a series of images (472x288) to appear next to a series of videos (also 472x288) with a border around the whole thing and some text under the images/videos.

Anyway, the first issue is that when I load a 472x288 into the project and place it on the timeline, it automatically becomes 328 pixels tall. No matter what I do in the clip based pan/crop settings I cannot get it to appear on the timeline in its native size. And of course, when I pan across it, the edge starts to disappear before getting to the edge of the video workspace.

So, I fall back to the track pan/crop. I can get this to work and get the image positioned like I want it, BUT the image is softened enough to be noticeable. All I want to do is to position the image, not scale it. But, as I mentioned just simply moving it using track pan/crop softens the image enough for the client to notice it.

Does anyone know of way to get a 472x288 image positioned within a 960x328 workspace in its native size? Or is Vegas going to insist that it has to be resized to 538x328 when placed on the timeline?

Thanks for any enlightenment offered.

Jim

This topic has been discussed here before, but I never saw anyone post a work around for what appears to be the way Vegas operates. The best that you can do is try to clean-up the problem after you've placed all your media in the timeline.

My free Timeline Tools Vegas Extension has a feature that will restore all selected events back to their original dimensions, if the media is smaller in both height and width than the project output dimensions.

Here's a link to the on-line Users Guide. The option is called "Don't fit small media".

Excellent. This works perfectly. It took a little while to figure out the positioning again, but the images (and videos) are no longer soft.

Thanks so much!

Just in case you're curious, the manual way to do it is to enter the project frame size in Pan/Crop's height & width fields.

Thanks Chienworks. It appears that I also have to disable "Lock Aspect Ratio" as well.
