Tracking face and adding object on top

Holly wrote on 8/16/2022, 4:36 AM

Hi all,

I've downloaded the Vegas Pro 20 trial with Effects and I'm trying to figure out how to track a human's head and then use that to add an object onto it, i.e. a hat. I saw a "Track Motion" option for my human clip which is what I did but from there I'm not sure how to get it to 'connect' with the hat layer above. I'm so used to after effects so this is all new to me lol.

Thank you for any help!

Thank you for that, I did have a look at it but it seems more like picture in picture and tracking a shape mask and I wasn't sure this is what I was looking for?

@Holly I use Mocha so can't give you the tracking info, but if you were adding a hat, that image would have to be a png of the hat with a transparent background, (or green screen or cut out in some way) the first video in that list shows adding text that has a transparent background & is on the track above, it's just transferring the tracking data over onto it, so the procedure would be similar for your hat https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/tutorials/motion-track-with-vegas-pro-18--126280/

@Former user Thank you very much!

I'm so close to doing it now, to only issue is when I try to transfer data to my hat image I only have the "picture in picture" option and not location. I can't find anything about it on google so I'm hoping someone here will have an idea. Thanks so much for your help :)

@Holly Hi, i just did what's in the video but i tracked Location in the Motion tracking options & got Picture in Picture & Location when i dragged the Motion Tracking Transfer onto the text,

I'll try with the other options

sorry i get Location on all options, if you press that arrow, what does it show?

@alifftudm95 made that video i shared 👍,

PS I tried with just a PNG of a heart & got just Picture in Picture as you mentioned, it must be something to do with Text vs PNG's, it still worked tho & the image can be adjusted in Pan Crop 👍

@Former user Thank you for taking the time to do that :)

I'm trying to do it to an image instead of text and this is what I get:

If I do it to text it works fine but... i need the hat haha

Thanks :)

@Holly Yeah sorry i get the picture in Picture, it distorts the image to the shape of the tracking region 😒

I might have to read the instructions or watch some videos 🙃😂 If i find the solution i'll let you know, like i say i use Mocha so have ignored this Vegas motion tracking, maybe it's time i knew more about it 🤦‍♂️😂

@MikeS Thanks that seems to work, i need to play with it a bit,

I tried following this video where bezier mask was used to track, then PinP was added as in your but vid but Extensions shows nothing https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/tutorials/motion-tracking--114927/

>where bezier mask was used to track

What version of Vegas are you using? The video you linked is for Movie Studio 16, and as a result is not the best guide for what you need to do in later versions of Vegas Pro (e.g motion tracking is no longer a subset of bezier masking and, as a result, you n o longer need to use the extensions; the motion tracking effect now contains those copying options directly). The video I linked should have showed all that correctly

@MikeS V19, I went through loads of videos, that was just one, I did say thanks that seems to work in reply to you video,

& Motion Tracking is still in Bezier Masking

Here's a step by step tutorial, along with how to get around a couple annoyances you might come across along the way. If you want to further refine your track, go to the exact frame where it messes up, move the points to where they should be, then track forward again from that point. You can also track forwards and backwards from any given point, or track frame by frame for the really tough spots, moving the points between each frame as needed to perfect the tracking. This is what you have to do for the complex 3D planar tracks like perspective tracking (for certain tough to track parts of your video).
