transcoded hd via camera...

hi,

i have a client who's just gone hd (a1p). he's shooting hd but using camera to downres to sd dvcam. this is because we work exclusively with tc batch capture / paper cut edl's, etc.

we obviously don't have this flexibility in hd unless going to sdi.

a. does the sd tc match the hd tc or is it regenerated?

b. at a later date is it possible to bring in the sd edl and then compile from the hd tapes?

thanks,

leslie

a) I believe so. Pretty certain we actually tested this.
b) It could be possible but not using batch capture. Assuming the camera was in rec run then the only difference between Vegas's time into file and the tape's TC would be a fixed offset. It might be easy to convert one to the other. Even if this could be made to work there's the usual opportunities for things to go wrong. I seem to have plenty of tapes from HDV cameras where the TC resets during the tape. The again it's not that uncommon in some of the DVCAM tapes I get as well although it's easy enough to restripe DVCAM tapes. Some of the HDV VCRs seem capable of doing that losslessly e.g. M25.

ah bob, where would i be without you......

thanks. it confirms what i thought.

now, if i can get the client to shoot complete tapes without tc breaks... (actually i've only ever had two tapes in over 15 years with tc problems from him, and both occassions he had someone else shooting...

i suppose there's not much use worrying at the moment since there's no way to distribute hd, well, at an affordable price from his pov.

i sometimes really miss the flexibility of pro equipment (but certainly NOT the price tags!)

thanks again bob,

One of my few recent jobs I gave a copy of the rough edit to the client as 720p WMV on a regular DVD. We was very happy with how that looked on his PC. Once he and I are happy with it, it'll be on Vimeo.
Of course the intent isn't to make money, he wants the work seen.
Agreed, it's a different story if you want a return on the eyeballs watching the content.
