Transferring Analog Video 8 to Mini DV

I have a bunch of analog Video 8 (not Hi 8) tapes that I need to capture and then write to Mini DV tape for safekeeping, followed by editing and burning to DVD using VMS + DVD.

I can do this by hooking up my Video 8 camera (which only has composite video out) through my Sony DV-HC40 camcorder (using it as a digitizer), etc. But I was hoping to save some time and maybe achieve better quaility by having a local video guy do an initial tramsfer of the Video 8 tapes to mini DV tapes. He uses Panasonic decks (that have S-video for higher quality) for playing the Video 8 tapes and creating the mini DV tapes. Although this gets me part of the way there, I would still have to then capture from the mini DV tapes into VMS, and I would use my Sony DV-HC40 for that.

Does anyone know whether I can expect to run into trouble (or not) if I try to play and capture from mini DV tapes in my Sony camcorder where those mini DV tapes are originally created on a Panasonic deck?

Can't help you with the Panasonic to Sony issue. But I have an HC-40 that I use to digitize a lot of stuff and it works great. If you have issues, let me know and I'll see if I can help.

Pretty much, MiniDV is MiniDV. Just make sure he records at the SP speed instead of the LP speed and you'll probably be fine. I pass tapes around with owners of other camcorder brands often and they all play on everyone else's camcorder.
