There is no default speed. The transition takes as long as the overlap between the two clips, or as long as the fade if you put it on a fade instead of an overlap. So, to slow it down you have to have it last longer. Overlap the clips farther to get a longer, slower transition.

Transition speed can be controlled by kerframe animation

Hi. I tend to use the Sony Zoom transition fairly regularly and have always been frustrated at the speed of zoom, even if I pull the transition out to around the 3 second mark. It always starts off very quick then slows as it finishes off. I'm sure the speed is constant but because it's covering less of the screen (zoom out) initially in the same amount of time, it appears to move very quickly.
I thought about using keyframes but surely these would make abrupt changes at the keyframe so the zoom wouldn't be smooth. Am I right or do you know a method that would result in a smooth but variable speed zoom? If so, can you explain how to do it please?

You can set the type//behaviour of overlap by rightclicking on the overlap area and chosing 'fade type'. There's a whole bunch to choose from!
