Are you talking about a rendered piece or something you're working on in the timeline?
If you're working on it, in the timeline, as you add FX, Text, Color Correction, it all takes a toll on your computer. You can try using the "Build Dynamic Ram preview".
Loop a 5 second spot surrounding the transition, and go to 'Tools / Build Dynamic Ram preview" and select it. It will give you a clean rendition of that area.
You can also try making your preview window smaller. Sometimes, this is good enough.

...and the quick way to accomplish this is to double-click on the transition and press Shift+B
The double-click will create a loop around the transition and the Shift+B will do a RAM preview. I work like this all the time.
This is the first time I've used this forum to seek advise and I have to say, it worked!! Shrinking the window did the trick and so did the loop/build dynamic ram function. Thanks everyone.
I know this is purely about TRANSITION work, but can I make a small plea here for SHIFT+M? Pre-rendered files.
For more involved work try SHIFT+M. This gives a pre-rendered file option. Although slower than SHIFT+B, I have found that having previously set my RAM to a lowish figure I sometimes don't get SHIFT+B to build enough, even for a transition, which may have some underlying FX stuff, etc.
SHIFT+B
Pros - Very fast
Cons - Dependant on the amount of RAM I have released within Preferences; limited by RAM available and that has a ceiling too; Reflects what setting I have in Preview; relatively short sections; volatile and renders at builds at Project Setting.
SHIFT+M
Pros - Not dependant on RAM setting in Preferences; doesn't NEED to be dependant on Preview Setting; can be set to any template I want; can be as long as space on hard drive allows!; if prior to further edit points, remains available for further previewing.
Cons - Slower than SHIFT+B; Takes up Hard Disc space ( no real big deal nowadays!); once disturbed, it is lost.
So, SHIFT+B for speed and when setting RAM high. SHIFT+M for getting more complex work to be seen, not so volatile, and when I've set RAM to a low figure.
Personally, I use both. I think here is still much Vegas development to make Previewing and the management of SHIFT+ B or M to play a more fluid/responsive and "cute" function than it does presently. As PCs and storage and FLASH pluggable memory is now becoming cheap/attainable/adaptable Vegas, IMO, is well placed to take advantage of these options for Previewing. As an experiment I stuck my USB Flash Drive into my PC and told VEgas to make it the Pre-render folder. Interesting. Almost like having a "RAM-To-Go" option.
One can only think/hope that as SD cards and memory cards become more and more available as standalone options, hastening to Real Time Previewing will be upon faster than we know. At present I have a USB slot on my Epson printer. Maybe there will come a time when even THAT can be called upon to make reviewing faster?
